I am shopping for a new mattress. Any suggestions? I know I do NOT want a Sleep Number bed, so that leaves me with a box-spring or foam.

My budget is $1500 for a Double.

I have a Sterns and Foster Queen (I think it's the Bradford or something - name changes depending on where you buy it.

It's my understanding that that is one of the ways that mattress stores trick you with price matching.

Example: Sleepys sells this bed under the name of Bradford for "799". You then call 1800mattress and they have the same bed for $849, but they call it the Branford. You ask them to price match Sleepys for $799, but they say no since it's not the same name - even though it is the same bed.

But, Sterns and Foster beds are usually pretty consistant no matter where you buy it I think. I believe S&F sets the price, not the sellers, unless they mark it up. That's why you don't hear many commercials advertising sales on S&F beds.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's my understanding.

Oh, and I love the bed. It's great, but that doesn't mean you'd like it. Everyone has a different liking on firmness, etc. So, your best bet is to just try different beds.

I have a king size Tempur-Pedic with the pillow top, it's from the line thats only carried at Brookstone.

The fiancee and I have been very happy with it, we've had it since May of this year.

$1500 for a double seems like a big budget. I'd almost go Queen for that much money, unless you're tiny. Heck, you could get a King pillow top from Denver Mattress for that much money.

Anyway, I have a super firm Monarch Supreme mattress from Denver Mattress. I would buy it again if I could, but they don't make them anymore.

I want to get a pillow top. They're nice, right? They are so comfortable whenever I sleep in them at the Ritz hotels.

I have a sleep number and it's been the best for my back. I spent $2k on two other matresses before buying this one. If I didn't buy a sleep number, I probably would have gone with the Tempur Pedic.

I have a Queen-sized Pillowtop. It was a few hundred at Sam's Club, great deal. Most comfortable I've ever had. My wife and I recently tried one of those foam Temperpedics at a mattress store and we're sold (as soon as we can afford it, heh). The Pillowtop is super-comfortable, but it's only good if (1) you're single or (2) you or your partner don't twitch in the night. I roll around and twitch and the Pillowtop transmits that movement to my wife's side of the bed and wakes her up. The foam one = no movement transmitted.

We have just gotten a new King Koil queen sized matress from my husbands brother for a great price and i love the matress. It is a pillowtop matress and it is great.

The only issue with it i see is the fact that because it has foam it does not "breathe" as much as i would like it too... so it gets warmer faster.

Queen Sealy pillow top, and I would never buy a pillow top again, WAY too much heat for me during the night. I like to be cold while I sleep, and this is not the mattress for that.

So, I am looking http://www.tempurpedic.com/ and see a Double OriginalBed for $999. Fine. So besides a platform/bed frame that I can buy at IKEA or someplace, what else do I NEED? Do I NEED a TempurPedic Foundation? A mattress protector might be good.

Some furniture place went out of business and I bought a king there for ~$500. It's comfortable, but I have no idea what brand it is.

Looks like Sears discontinued ours... so I would not buy it again ;)

It was a Sear-O-Pedic pillowtop queen.

This is what we have:
http://www.dormea.com/radiance.asp

Very comfortable, has gotten softer over the past couple months that we've been sleeping on it. Picked it up from the little shop in the mall this company has. MSRP for the King size is $1800, delivery is $100, and it is $100 per pillow (special super comfy foam filled bla bla). We got everything for $1600 out the door (delivered, tax, everything). :D Helluva deal IMO, and is good for us.

Much more comfortable on the back, but it does trap heat a little more than a conventional bed.

yes!

get a queen or king from Costco and spend the extra $ on... , something

i can understand why folks would want to spend money on a good quality matress.
there are some things that i feel its worth it to spend money on a high quality item instead of skimping on it and going cheap.

Is a double the same size as a full? Get a queen at least.

We got our Sealy Posturpedic at Costco. There'll be a coupon coming up in January/February. Last year I think the matresses were $550 and the coupon was $120? We really like ours, and the one they had last year looked even better.

That's for the mattress and boxspring btw.

Oh - would I buy it again? Hell yes.

I got a full Sealy Posturepedic (non-pillowtop) and I've been pretty happy with it. It cost me $600 for the set on sale. I have noticed that the mattress pad I use makes a significant difference in how comfortable I find it to be.

Don't equate inexpensive with inferior.

A Twin XL Tempur-Pedic Supreme with Pillpw Top from Brookstone costs $2399 without S&H!

$1500 is nothing.
