I have been following the thread about Bertuzzi's sentence. And I am curious about where people are on justness of Bertuzzi's punishment.

I am also curious how this breaksdown between hockey and non-hockey fans. So please mention if you are a fan or not.

I don't think they should just suspend him for the rest of the season, but a whole 82 games. He needs to be punished and what they gave him was just a slap on the hand.

I am a hockey fan too.

You can't really say it isn't harsh enough yet. Bettman hasn't decided if he'll be suspended at all next year. until he decides that he will, or won't, you can't really vote on this.

(there probably won't be a full season next year anyway. who knows how long the lockout will be.)

That's why I said he needs to be suspended for 82 games and not just a season. He should not get a break because of the lockout.

A precedent has already been set in the past. Sucker punches from behind have only been given 10-12 games, and a few of those caused career ending injuries. The nhl cannot go from 10-12 games to 82 games.

The suspension is fair.

12 games for sending a player out possibly for life?

Are you a fan? If so, how long have you been following the sport?

been watching the canucks since the mid 90's. don't follow it extremly close, but i watch them whenever they have a game on here (kansas).

Do you hockey fans think that fighting is part of the game? I know this would make a good subject for a poll.

Yes. What Bertuzzi did is not.

Fan for 5+ years, and he should not be playing hockey anymore.

As Pyonir said you can't really say yet. Next year for Bertuzzi will depend of Moore's status. I think if Moore is still not playing at the beginning of next year that Bertuzzi will be out say 20 games or so, unless they go for a Samurai McSorley style of the entire next year (which is possible given the publicity and outcry from this indident).

edit: fan for 4 years, but have really gotten into it the last 2 years and have really begun to understand the rules and history of it.

Sounds about right. I compare this to the Hunter/Turgeon ordeal and 21 games was handed out then... this sounds on par.

Lots of newer fans in this thread. that is good. Everyone says people are losing interest in hockey, nice to see some getting into it.

I'm still new too though. I've only been a fan for about 10 years or so.

The assigned suspension time is fair.

It's different than the McSorley case as there was no "weapon" involved. I think the review at the end of the season is bogus though. I guess it really doesn't matter as they'll probably strike next season.

Been a Canucks fan since I was a kid.

Do you guys think the Bertuzzi incident will negatively effect the perception of the NHL and hockey?

hockey fan here .... he should be out as many games as Moore is out. And if Moore can never come back neither can he.

On a sidenote: I still think Bertuzzi's salary should go to Moore. NHL needs to make stricter regulations regarding sucker punches. I'm all for the scuffles and little fights.. but sucker punches are for pansies.

I think the punishment is a good start and he should probably miss part of next year too.
There is no place for his actions in ANY sport.

Yes, I am a long time hockey fan.

While I AM NOT a hockey fan, it seems to me that fighting during games is all part of it. Although, this was a sucker punch from behind, and he fell on the guy as he was going down, that is what caused the broken neck. He did not mean to do that. So, I say he is being punished just fine for the sucker punch. The broken neck was not intended.

It doesn't matter if he intended to break his neck or not. Him breaking his neck is a direct result of being punched from behind and being knocked out.

I'm not sure if Canada or Vancouver has this law in their statutes, but in most places in the US if you commit a battery and as a direct result of that battery the person battered is cause serious bodily harm or death, you are responsible for it.
