What is your favorite IDE cdrom and why? What do you feel is the best IDE cd-rom available? I'm interested to hear your input as cd-rom's are rarely discussed. This is a somewhat crucial part of the system, as most programs/data/ etc are kept on cd's. Getting the data to the hard drive from the cd is definitely a issue of concern.

As for myself, I like the Acer 50x because it can read anything you throw at it and fast and it's cheap. I bought a Kenwood 62x once, and returned it the next day because it simply could not read sh*t and transfer speed was only "ok."

Let's here what you have to say

Toshiba. They have been the most reliable I have ever used over the years by far.

If the question were for SCSI, you already know what the answer would be.

I personally prefer Teac: reliable, fast, quiet. What more could you want?

only get kenwood if you need the cdrom consistently cuz it's pricey. don't get me wrong, kenwoods are sweet but i rarely use my cdrom.

I agree with everyone, it's definitely Toshiba. I had that drive for a few months hoping to find upgrade my system with the Kenwood 72x drive. This drive, though it may be fast, sucks in so many ways - the obvious being that it has problems reading cd-r and cd-rw's. Oh well :( - wish i had that toshiba of mine.

My Asus 40X was excellent, but I sold it when I went SCSI for the CD and CDRW. Certainly the Plextor 40X Wide that replaced it feels no faster nor quieter. Unfortinately, I understand that their 50X followup is quite loud.

I usually get the cheapest generic C/D ROM I can get.
The last 2 I purchased cost me $20 each after rebates.
They're working just fine.........
Best time for deals is right now, before Christmas.....
Best Buy, CC, CompUSA will have a deal....

I've always seemed to have decent luck with AOpen CDroms. Started on a 4x when they first came out and currently have a 40x in my secondary computer. The 4x just would not die :p and I actually sold it in an old machine last year finally.

Just my .02:)

I have used NEC 24x CD-ROM drive over 2 years and it still works perfectly. Liteon, Samsung (Creative Labs) and Cyberdrive died within first month...

Hey everybody...
While were on the topic of cdrom drives, i gotta question...
Are alll cdroms built the same or do they have different architectures?
I was asking a friend of mine who knows all about computers which cd rom has the fastest DAE ( error proof, of course ) and he said " it didn't matter; they're all the same in almost every single way"
Is this true or what?

I have the kenwood 72x and its crap with cdr. But its so quiet, I just use by pioneer dvd if it can't read it but with the lastest firmware from kenwood, they fixed it somewhat but its not on par with other drives.

I got myself a Kenwood 72x also. After the firmware updates it is working very spiffy, and extremely quiet.

I like my Plextor 8/4/32 IDE Burner. It rips audio at about 12x, which is pretty good. Its fairly quiet, loads fast and burns well. As far as readers are concerned, I like Asus drives, which are known for good audio extraction as well. I would definetly stay away from Mitsumi, Afreey, Lite-On, and Toshiba. Reason -- crappy audio extraction. But I guess its all what you use them for.

I like my Asus 50x.
Had it for over a year, still runs great.
GOtta love 10,400rpm :D :D :D :D :D
Louder than my 120mm YS Tech!!!

I also have a 6x plex (ultra quiet...), and a 40x plex (very quick)
Never benched the 2, but I'd probably say the 50x is a tad quicker.

I like my Asus 50x. Why? It is variable speed settings 50x, 40x, 32x, 24x and 8x. Plus it does fast DAE. I exchanged a Toshiba for this drive because of the Toshiba's slow DAE performance.

I Love Acer's I know a lot of people say that they are junk, but I bought an Acer 4x about 7 years ago, and it still is working in a friends computer (never cleaned, i might add!!), I bought a 32x 3 years as a Christmas Gift for my Mom, and hers still runs flawlessly. And both my systems have Acer 40x's One I bought 2 years ago, the other about a year ago, and they still work!!
And they are cheap!! ($40)
