Assuming most people have something on their computers that is technically illegal (from unregistered shareware to fully illegal OSs), what would you do if it were physically impossible to get/use pirated software?

same here, only pay for thing that i need is Windows XP, and i did NOT pirate my copy anyway

I use Open Office and TB
I can use Gimp instead of PS - which i got a sweet school deal on
and thats all the stuff i use

I'd be using Windows XP since it costs $45 for a full professional version at my school. If I wasn't in school, I'd be using Gentoo.

You assume too much. Nothing on any of my machines is pirated. I pay for what I use.

Campus agreement? What other MS stuff can you pick up?

By the way, $45 is expensive if you are on a campus agreement.

I wouldn't change a thing. There is no real reason for me to pirate since I can get great deals on Software at school.

Considering that Win2k, mIRC, and Nero are the ONLY pieces of non-free software that I use at home on a regular basis, I'd say free. PowerDVD gets occasional use, but that came bundled with my soundcard. Though granted I have Musicmatch while I get EAC figured out (trying to figure out what the deal is with lame not working with it...). I do pay for my shareware.

<-- has a license for mIRC, Musicmatch, and Opera 6.x

Yeah, I've been rather disappointed by U-M's custom license agreement with MS. All MS software is $45...XP, Office, Visual Basic, etc. which is pretty expensive compared to all the other license agreements I've seen @ other schools.

It sure is. Each title is $5 here with the exception of .Net which is $10.

The cheapest I've heard about is one school that had a deal where if you wanted the latest MS software, you just walk upto the bookstore's counter, grab one off of a tall spindle, and walk out with it.

There are schools that provide certain titles for free. Sure it is nice, but so is $5 software. ;)

How do they know if you're affiliated with the University or not?

It's cute how you can get deals on software if you're a student, but you pay full rapeme price if you're not a student.

Piracy and the seedy underbelly of computers and the internet is why I got into it.
I suppose I'd make the final step to full open source.
