At home I was connecting at 46000 (some 5.75kb/sec) but would never get over 4kb/sec.

I've just moved into my house in London and the connection has only gone up to 49200 but my download speed has gone up to about 5.8kb/sec (from a number of sources!)

I would say that you are definitely LUCKY! That's some great transfer rates on a 56K modem. The crappy dial-up service at the company where I work has only 28.8 modems which connect at 24,000 or less. It really blows.

On FREELANE (free access from Excite) I get great connections of 52,000 and 53,333 but CRAPPY downloads of 1k/sec!! I need better service, but free or close.... Any suggestions for one local to Winnipeg, MB, Canada, or 1-800?

Burst means nothing as it may be already cached a bit. You may notice that if you wait a while before confirming a file download it'll start at like 20kb/sec because while it was waiting for your response it starts downloading (and caching) the files.

I average about 3kps from most sites. Often I can get about 5.5-6kps form better servers. i've seen it burst to 14 and 15kbps on ftp though.... never sustained for more than a few seconds though.

Yeah, before today, with my 56k I'd rarely get above 5K/s. But now of course I have my lovely, sweet, boootiful ADSL and my downloads are about 60K/s - not to mention 30ms in game pings in Quake 3 :D

sebfrost,
I connect at 48kbps-52kbps with downloads usually in the 4.9 to 5.5 range on a local isp.

4kb/sec to 5.6kb/sec.

I've ripped through a high text file at 20k/sec before (with compression etc...)

NO FAIR! I have a 56k modem and I connect at 26400. I only download at about 1kb/s!

It's the phone lines I tell ya. But the phone company won't do anything about it.

I can't even play Q3A online because it is so bad.

56k 3com PCI hardware modem, I dial anywhere from 42333 (very rare) to 28800. for some reason, my dial up speed doesn't seem to reflect my overall speed, ie, I dial at 32000, and SHOULD get 4k overall (32000/8 is 4000BYTES) but I get more like 3.2 or so (yeah part of it is the error correction/windowing).

Still, if I can connect at 43333bps, it means my ISP isn't good enought to keep up with demand during the day.

Snow Patrol - Ya git. How long you had ADSL for. I'm still waiting....waiting...waiting...this is just too bad.

Whats the crack with the User Ratio 20:1/50:1. What info can you give me? Why only 60k/sec?

Cheers,

Shagz

Just got it today mate :)

<< Why only 60k/sec? >>

That should be 60K/s. I have the 512 Kilobit/sec option, so 60.0 K bytes/sec is approaching my theoretical max. For example, I downloaded a 4 meg MP3 in just over a minute just now. Nice :)

I don't know what the connection ratio is, but I'm getting a great connection and no problems (no packet loss in games, constant in game ping of around 35-40 in Quake 3). It rocks, it's worth the wait :D Hope you get yours soon, any news?

Try ringing this number: 0800 169 8639

edit: bits/byte error

I've set my modem to connect @ 49,333. This lower speed gives me the best bandwidth. Generally download @ 5.3-5.7Kb/s.

Start off with burst 26.6 kb/sec. Then my download speed is from 4.8 to 6.2 kb/sec. My connection speed is 46000 to 49000. I have a 56K modem, I live just a mile from the server.

snow patrol - Which ISP have you gone through (BT)? Also is it costing £40/month? Have BT actually confirmed that this is the final rate for your service?

Thanks for the number, i'll give it a ring today and see if I get any joy.
