POLL: what do you think of the smaller game boxes?

i dont keep the boxes after a week. who wants to look at the screenshots anyway? this way they can stock more copies of HL2 to share the goodness when it comes out .

Whoever voted for "boxes? i just download all my games straight off the net!" better hope the mods around here can't see what you voted for ... Piracy isn't something they like.

I like the smaller boxes. Don't waste as much space in the store so there are more games there, and don't hog space in your room or closet.

I like 'em. In fact, personally I would prefer even smaller boxes (like DVD cases) but I know I'm in the minority on that one.

I don't really care about the boxes. They're a nuisance because they're too fancy to be thrown away, yet I'll never look at them again.

I do like the smaller boxes myself. Like ArmchairAthlete said, the retail stores will have to buy more of them to fill up more shelf space and in return there will be more to buy, especially when they go on sale (only when I buy), they won't run out as fast.

edit: i changed the poll to make it more "acceptable"

I voted the way i get my games does not require media to be stored on. *cough*... I'm not ashamed to admit it! That's right, I'm playing Ragnarok online 😱

brave man

I like the smaller boxes with the exception of games that have big manuals and then NO FREAKING JEWEL CASE FOR A 3-4 CD GAME. (*cough*) NWN (*cough*) UT2k3 (*cough*). Of course, these games might not have had jewel cases even in larger boxes.

They take up less shelf space in the store (more copies for all) and let me show off more games on my bookshelf 😉

I usually threw those big bulky boxes out and now anything I get w/ the dvd covers I save so I guess I do appreciate the smaller game boxes 🙂

well another issue too is added cost. Those high detail super glossy big boxes aren't cheap. Even if you are making a half a million at a shot, each box still probably costs the company at least $1.50-$3 which means an added $5-7 for the consumer. It depends on the box though, some boxes are much fancier then others with gold foil, raised relief, embossing. All that costs alot of money. Ever notice how cheap OEM stuff is that's just a CD? Legitly Downloadable software is also usually cheaper. Sometimes half the retail price (Although thats not totally because of no packaging).

Still, I'd like more OEM-type options available for people who don't want or need all the packaging or even manuals. I'm fine with having PDF manuals included on a CD in some cases. I'd like to see more game companies have options to buy CD Keys as well but I doubt that will ever happen. Since many of my oline games I run one more then one machine at once, I already have the CD's and boxes and manuals, I just need another req Key to go online. I could understand though that game companies don't want people copying or DLing software and buying a CD key for cheap. I'm not asking for super cheap, just like OEM prices. High enough to dissuade a pirater but low enough to make it a deal for someone who already bought their product. It would be nice to go to a store and see boxed games and their CD/DVD case only counterparts for 20%-30% cheaper.

Newegg had OEM battlefield 1942's for like $20 at one point. Of course they sold out within ours... I needed a 2nd copy so I had to pay for a full retail boxed version for $40. They got my money but I almost didnt buy it. There are many games I demo'd and would buy an OEM CD, but it's not worth full retail for me. Thats alot of lost sales from people in the same boat as me. One of my girlfriend's also mistakenly threw out one of my CD sleeve's with SOF2's CD-key on it. I want to replace it but I'm not buying another one at full retail.

Fancy boxes are here to stay. Most people don't go on the net and anticipate buying a game the instant it is released (like us 🙂.) They'll browse the store for boxes that draw their attention and then give them a once over before plunking down their money. The companies unfortunately depend on these types of sales and need all the gloss they can get on their box to draw in people who may not have even picked it up.
