I don't hate cops. It would be make for a tough Christmas if I did. Four people in my immediate family are cops.

However, when I deal with cops on a professional basis, I'm well aware that I'm dealing with someone who has been put in a position of great temptation and the thing that is tempting them is one of the greatest narcotics of them all....Power. I don't come into a situation assuming the worst of them, but I'm fully aware that the person I'm dealing with could corrupt the legal system to my supreme detriment.

Ha ha, thats a stupid comment. I once needed the cops when i was robbed at gun point for $100. I got locked up because the asshole didnt think i was telling him the whole story. He later received a reprimand. I hope he is now a rent-a-cop at the mall. This is just one instance of me being "protected and served." Cops are generally there "to intimidate and brutalize." Yes, i have had the shit kicked out of me by cops. The first time was when i was a kid out past curfew. I have already said it once, but it deserves to be said again, cops have way too much power for the limited training they receive.

So what you're saying is you don't like random searches and "police officers" with automatic rifles patrolling our cities?

Being unprepared works a lot better
So "Operation Torch" is really an NYC initiative to prepare officers for the event of a terrorist robbing the subway with a automatic rifle?

Nice try.

If police patrols were simply about having more firepower than the enemy, we should just put them in armored Humvees with guy manning the roof-mounted .50 cal.

In fact, we already do that in Iraq. And guess what? They "bad-guys" don't just walk around picking fights with people who have bigger guns. They hide, they avoid, they blend-in, and they set traps (IEDs, snipers, etc.)

Putting a guy with full body armor and an automatic rifle on patrol just tells the "bad-guys" who to avoid and who to target.

yeah. Poll needs option:

Cops have a tough job, and so many of them deserve respect. However, certain cops are brainless meatheads who were abused throughout childhood and are only itching for a chance to power-trip on innocents. Depending on where you encounter cops (New Orleans or Chicago for example; cities with notoriously awful police departments), your perspective on law enforcement can be greatly influenced to the negative...and for good reason. Many bad cops otu there that give a bad name to the (likely majority) good cops.

put that option in and I'll vote.

btw...I've never encountered law enforcement before ;)

I find that most cops I actually see are assholes who think they are above the law. I live in Broward county Florida. Just this morning (and one who lives in my complex no less) pulls out into the same street as me, the same turning lane as me.. sees the light turning red, flips his lights on, swerves out of the turning lane and into traffic so he didn't have to wait.

I know it's common, but I don't have to like it. Police are not above the law.

Some cops are cool, other cops are freaking power whores. They'd shut anyone down for the most stupid things. I have so many stories of cops being absolutely unjust.

Cops have been pretty good to me. I have accidentally broken a handful of laws (such as being in a park after curfew, speeding, etc) and the cops have always been really polite and have not given me a ticket or even a warning.

I caused a wreck once (ran a stop sign) and they cop was very nice. He only gave me a ticket for running a stop sign and offered to give me a ride if I needed it.

But one time, I was driving out of state. I was in a construction zone (40mph), but I was going 30mph due to traffic. A state police car pulled me over right after the construction ended and gave me a ticket for going 50mph in a 40mph. That pissed me off a lot. Plus he a was an ass the whole time he was talking to me.

Yeah asshole cops like to make up tickets for out of state drivers, because they know the odds of you coming in for the court date are slim to none...

it's ez money

Nobody deserves respect until they earn it.

No arguments here. Some have certainly earned it, but not all of course. You've taken that quote a weee bit out of context though. I spend most of that post bashing bad cops, iyrc ;)

I am of the opinion that many tickets are given by cops simply to generate revenue and fill an 'unwritten' quota in easy ticket spots where the speed limits are unreasonable or the situation creates an easy 'violation'. Been there. Done that. Know cops (personally) who do that. I don't blame the cops, I blame the system.

Watched one arrest my friend without reading his rights. Got a ticket from one for riding a bicycle at night without a flood lamp. Got cuffed by one for being with a friend who had a public dispute with someone he didn't like, because they were acting like jackasses. Watched one taser a guy that just left the same bar I did, even though he was cooperating with the police outside and wasn't being threatening at all. Don't know what he did to get the cops to come in the first place.

*shrug*
I don't hate them, but I don't agree with their methods that I've seen firsthand.
