Most of the ones I have ever been stopped by are total dicks from having lights out to going 80 mph in a 65 on the freeway.... so nothing serious that would warrent such behavior.
The ones I have known personally have been decent guys but still are aholes.

Kinda funny I had once thought about being one ! haha

The cops I've met seem like pretty down to earth and friendly people.
I've got no problems with the police.

I always forget about him since he lives 2 doors down, but he's a very nice guy with 2 children and a westie. He snowplows our in-between neighbor's driveway from snow year after year because they are old. He's probably the nicest neighbor I've ever met.

Most people in general are useless assholes. I don't know why anyone would expect cops to be an exception.

If the police departments would actually punish abusive and unprofessional officers, public perception of cops would probably be more positive.

A friend of mine was a victim of police brutality. Ever since that incident I haven't looked at the police in the same light.

Did you witness it?

I was at a Citibank once after being tailgated by an officer for about 1/2 mile. He had no lights on. When I pulled in he pulled in a T fashion behind my car...still no lights.

My wife and I got out and as soon as we got to the door and opened it he got hysterical over his PA ordering us back in the car immediately with our hands in plain view.

He got out, unholstered his weapon and proceeded to tell us and the audience loudly he was in the right to shoot us for exiting our vehicle...he repeated this over and over. Then he asked we couldn't pick a bank outside of Palm Beach to use. The guy had some issues.

I ended up getting a ticket with just a penal code written on it, no envelope with who to send it to/contact, etc.

It ended up being a window tint ticket. I called the station and apparently this asshole thought he was the new town sheriff in Palm Beach. He has previously pulled over someone in front of the elementary school that worked in Palm Beach in a like fashion.

I was told it had been handled...I am not sure what that means, but a new cop has been on duty now when we drive through there.

Depends.. in my experience, city cops = complete fucking assholes. Had guns drawn on me without sufficient reason before. Here in the middle of nowhere, a college town, they seem pretty reasonable when I've had to deal with them. Once got rid of some idiots at a house party where I lived, another time pulled over my roommate for a broken taillight and let him off with a warning to fix it without ever being condescending or a dick about it. A nice older guy. Also came to take a statement from a neighbor girl who had her ex bf with a restraining order harassing her and we took her into our house, cops came and did a good job.

Maybe I like them more here because they're helping me more than harassing me.

You're right, that happens all the time.
So what if it doesn't? You generalized. He provided an example in contradiction. That's all.

In the dealings I've had with cops, most of the times they have not been honest. They manipulate the situation in order to get you to cooperate etc. I understand what a cop does. They enforce the law. Law's are general rules and generalization, which is what this whole thread has been filled with, often do not create the best for every situation. What they do is maintain a certain level or standard. How close you are to fitting that standard may in fact be how much you agree with law enforcement.

Anyway I disagree with many laws and the government overall. One of the reasons people hate cops is that as an adult people are used to having authority over themselves. On his or her own property they are almost sovereign. When a cop comes through the door or pulls you over while you are driving they violate that. They may treat you like a kid during that process. Basically, nobody likes having less power in a threatening situation.

Cops aren't needed to help often, they are more often there to punish. That's why people don't like them. I mean cops write people tickets, they find evidence to bring against people. Nothing like having your tax dollar's work against you heh,.

I don't like cops, I have only had experience with them a few times I can remember and 1 of them involved a cop pulling a gun on me after pulling me over and then after patting me down for weapons telling me I have a broken headlight! I mean WTF was that, I almost want to claim racism except I am white, but I was coming out of the poor section of town in a busted ass car so they probably assumed I was a drug dealer or something. Also every time I have ever talked to a cop they always talked down to me, even when they are asking a question like "have you seen a dude matching XXXX description around here" they make it sound like an interrogation.

I agree with many here that alot of cops are sort of the "high school bully" type people who never went to college and are trying to find a way to boss people around due to some personal insecurity issues. Obviously that is a major stereotype, but I have only mad one experience with the cops when they were actually helpful and that involved them taking my mother away to a mental institution, so not exactly the best of memories there either (although it was for the best that she went, but still not a fun night).

I don't hate individual cops. Rather, I hate what police protection has become in this country, especially with regard to the amount of power afforded to these individuals in the guise of public safety.

Any word on that case?

I hope she sued that department so bad they had to close shop.
My guess is the department have a new "traffic enforcement initiative" in the next few months to pay for the settlement.

What's the alternative? They don't want to seem weak or not in control of any situation. It's for their own protection. You'd do it too if you were a cop who faced felons everyday. You know what it's like when people smell fear or weakness. A cop who shows any of that is majorly fuct.

I don't mind them, just that they profile and don't listen to what you have to say.
