36 and can say that cops are mostly crap like most employees are now. There are a few great ones that go that extra mile.

you have now elected to carry the burden of proof.

Actually, I think you have to prove your stance first :p.

the challenger does. i can then refute.

err no.

you made a statement. he called you on it. it is up to you to prove what you said. it is not up to him to prove you wrong.

It's funny, I remember having this very same conversation with dmccowen.

most here have never been in more than a single debate for a class project yet alone understanding them.

I don't hate all cops, but I realize that the sole purpose of their job is to throw you, me, and anyone else they can in jail. It's what they are paid to do.

That being said I try to distance myself from them and live 'under the radar' so to speak.

Well, sure. Their stated porpose is to "serve and protect." The way they do that is to get people who don't conform to society's standards (i.e. law breakers) off the street and keep society safe.

When you're (I'm) driving down the street and pass a police car, the officer looks at your (my) vehicle and would sure like to give you (me) a ticket if your (my) plate is not up to date. Your (my) only defense is to not be expired. He wants to give you (me) a ticket. If you (I) are doing something worse, and he can arrest you (me), that's all the better. It's his job to arrest you (me). If he doesn't make arrests, then he is not doing his job.

I disagree with a lot of tactics that traffic cops use to nail people for tickets but in the end if you do not break the law or hang around people that cause trouble then I don't see why cops would be a problem for you. I understand some cops are real douche bags on power trips but you shouldn't even have to worry about them if you just stay out of trouble.

The exception is when other assholes break the law and it effects you. Then there are cases where cops just don't put in enough effort to fix the problem for whatever reason they use to justify not doing their job. That really bothers me. Thankfully, I cannot recall a time where I have fallen victim to that yet.

1. Woman is assaulted....she calls 911 for help.
2. Police arrive and think she is the bad guy so they smack her around some more.
3. They take her to jail and then rip her cloths off and leave her naked and untreated for 6 hours.

And we pay their salary and they still treat us like crap.

Cops have been pretty good to me. I have accidentally broken a handful of laws (such as being in a park after curfew, speeding, etc) and the cops have always been really polite and have not given me a ticket or even a warning.

I caused a wreck once (ran a stop sign) and they cop was very nice. He only gave me a ticket for running a stop sign and offered to give me a ride if I needed it.

But one time, I was driving out of state. I was in a construction zone (40mph), but I was going 30mph due to traffic. A state police car pulled me over right after the construction ended and gave me a ticket for going 50mph in a 40mph. That pissed me off a lot. Plus he a was an ass the whole time he was talking to me.

Wow... that was unreadable. :p So I think you see the problem with your original post - a cop's purpose is to catch law breakers, not to "throw you, me and anyone else they can in jail."

I don't think you'd find many cops who would rather have more arrests (more crime) than fewer arrests (less crime).

...and here we have it folks. The post pointing out an exception that is way off in left field...as if anything in life did not contain exceptions.

Let's face it man. Mosh is right. While I realize there are news stories printed all of the time pointing nasty fingers at cops for this and that the truth is that if we were somehow able to determine the ratio of decisions made by cops which were legitimate as opposed to ones which clearly were not justified then I am certain you find that the legitimate decisions are by far the winner.

Most are alright, but they do not deserve to be put on a pedastill imho. They are just regular human beings, just as flawed, just as corrupt, and just as biased. The vast majority you do not have to worry about, but the few that are are sufficiently enough to keep your eye out for your own liberties. We as a people are inherently suspicious of government, and by extension, those who the government grants powers such as policemen have. I once had a member of my family arrested wrongfully because a neighbor with whom we had a property dispute knew the police higher-ups. They had a sherriff out for my relative under false pretenses by calling in a tip to the officer in person, whereas we couldn't even get the dept to return our call. He who has the gold makes the rules, remember that.

That being said, I have been in situations where the police were as levelheaded and nice as can be, like a good neighbor. They just wanted to be sure everything is alright and that no trouble occurs. It all depends on the person behind the uniform.

There is only "I dislike cops" or "I don't mind cops"

There is no option for "I like cops".

Donate money to your local fraternal order of police and they'll give you a sticker/decal.

Sure there are good decent cops out there. But with good experience with them is marred by total douchebags who think they have the power to do anything.

Very true. To add to this, I think the biggest problem that people have is that the punishment for actions that infringe on the rights of citizens is both EXTREMELY rare as well as light. Sure, actions that make CNN generally get punished, but what about the thousands of other cases every year?

I hate all BAD cops. Some of them need to be shot on duty. The good cops need major pay raises and promotion.

Of dealing with cops that I met, all of them were professional and nice, which is more than acceptable. I only had one bad cop situation. He and his partner basically pushed me and my friends around physically because just because he didn't like Asians/blacks. He was threatening me and my friends whom were hanging out waiting for the bus at a BUS STOP. For some reason he was under the impression we were dealing drugs? or some shit, calling us "ch&nks and n***er". But that didn't make me hate all cops. Just the shitty and bad ones like this guy and his partner.

Edit the above quote for readability. At least I didn't put '/she' after every occurance of the word 'he.' ;)

If there was no crime and no need for arrests, then there would be no need those cops to have a job. I don't think they would like that either.

I sure as hell bet there are incentives (promotions) to make The Big Bust. Any one of us is a likely cantidate for that. I still stand by my original statement.

the experience as a kid with cops was horrible because..... you got caught for doing something wrong? or were the cops doing something wrong to you in those cases?

It wasn't so much the caught doing something wrong part, but the treatment in said cases. Like the first time I got pulled over, the cop waited inside his car for 30 minutes. I had never been pulled over so I wasn't sure what was going on, so I got out of my car and he started to flip out. Plus, he pulled me over by speeding down the street at 80mph until he caught up to me without his flashing lights on (in the dark). Then he turned them on after tailgating me and causing me to speed up. When he questioned me he asked why I sped up and said having someone on my ass isn't a valid reason. What a bunch of lame shit that was.

In fact, I think all of my experience with cops is from speeding. Cops that give speeding tickets are angry.

Those cops didnt happen to look like this did they ?

A friend of mine was a victim of police brutality. Ever since that incident I haven't looked at the police in the same light.
