POLL: What do you think of cops?

yeap to hate all cops is nieve. the majority are honest and work hard.

trouble is all it takes is few to ruin the reputation of all.

but anyone that blindly trust and does what the cop ask without quesiton is just as nieve.

most of the runins i have had with the law involved them giving me a break of some sort. some cops seem to have the power trip going but perhaps it is a product of being in that job. i don't mind them. my last speeding ticket was reduced to almost nothing and he could have bent me over with mega fines and points.

Cops have entirely too much power and insufficient training. A large proportion of them are just assholes on a power trip.

And 77% of all statistics are made up on the spot. 98% of internet generalizations are correct.

edit:

I will say my experiences with cops have varied wildly from region to region (they're generally nicer here in Saint Louis than the few I've dealt with in Chicago and L.A). This MIGHT have been because I'm local here and an 'out of towner' in other cities.

I'll also say the experiences have varied wildly based on how I presented myself. When I've tossed them attitude (I was a stupid teenager once, too), I've gotten it back. When I pull over right away, keep my hands on the wheel while they walk up, have my wallet already sitting on the dash ready to hand my ID over, things go just fine. If I go out of my way to increase their comfort level, they're much cooler.

I respect all cops even if the one I happen to be dealing with is an asshole (this is a good way to avoid more trouble than you are already in). Trust is a whole other issue entirely. The only cop I trust is my best friend's brother who I've known for 20+ years.

I don't hate them or like them in general. They exist to do their job and like any other profession it has its pricks and decent guys.

You can't hit him with that one cuz he didn't really state a statistic ;/

in my own, limited personal experience... they never seem to be around when they're needed, but they're always there when I'm doing something stupid (like 37 in a 35... got pulled over for that a couple months ago).

i've had bad experiences with cops mostly, but to say i would hate all cops would be overgeneralizing. it does take a few lazy and dishonest cops to ruin the reputation, as it would for some bad clergy to make an entire church look bad. generalizing is a bad thing to do, but it makes it that much more important for people in those type of positions to not fck up!!!!!!

Plus it's not a good idea to give shit to a asshole with a gun.

I'm not saying all cops are bad, Hell I am all for cops, and went through the police academy several years ago.

When it comes down to it. Cops are just regular guys/gals, with one of the highest stress jobs you can imagine.

For all the people that think all cops suck and they are assholes; You go work a job where you have to deal with the worst of society everyday. Where you have to be on alert 100% of the time, because if you don't your next shift might be in a pine box.

Problem is when they are bad they are really bad.

High stress job. Not particularity well paid. Easily corruptible by their surroundings.

I'm personal friends with many cops, and if I didn't personally know them I wouldn't want to be pulled over or apprehended by any of them.

there are too many people who automatically concede that cops = perfect, and they'll submit to anybody in a position of authority.

sorry, a policeman is just another guy with another job. im sure you have many lousy coworkers in your professional workplace. so there is no logical reason that there SHOULDNT be lousy cops out there likewise. and guess what? the requirements to be a police officer is probably less stringent than your professional job! so yes, they should be given more training.

oh, and lets not forget the Stanford Prison Experiment.

+1.
my best friend is NYPD. they get paid 32k SALARY their first year. IN NEW YORK CITY. and they stay in the 30s until the FIFTH year on the job. the fact that they get paid almost nothing, and that theyre wielding ticket books and weapons, i can see why its easy to get on a power trip

It's weird. My brother is a cop and when he took me to work with him, I got to meet all the other cops and they were an incredibly cool bunch. Yet, on the other side of things, every time I got in trouble with the cops as a kid it was a horrible experience. Except when we got caught with fireworks, that cop was insanely cool (he caught us with fireworks that fired over 10feet, which, I believe is illegal blah blah blah, and let us go).

I  Cops! (the TV show, right?)

and i respect law enforcement officers, they have a "normal" job which they may get killed doing, most people don't have jobs where they might die

the experience as a kid with cops was horrible because..... you got caught for doing something wrong? or were the cops doing something wrong to you in those cases?

I don't hate all cops but damn I sure do hate every ones I have encountered from DPD and Blackhawk CO.

DPD is untrustworhy anyway they will not uphold the open records act at all.

I've had good experiences with them and I treat them with respect. They do something that I would probably never do.

I wonder if I made a bumper sticker like "I support my local police" and got pulled over... would they be more willing to let me go? That'd be an interesting study.

I've had varied experiences with cops. Some are ok guys, some are jerks on power trips. The ones I find the most frustrating are the ones that use their squad car to bully their way through traffic.

The poll doesn't have an option for my opinion so I'm not voting.
