I don't hang up on them... I just put the phone down for ~5 minutes to let them waste their breath for nothing 🙂
 
OMG! I put the phone down 7 minutes ago now (got a survey guy.. that's why I made this poll) and I just picked it up to listen... I hear:

"Hello? Hello?"

HAHAHAHA
 
depends on my mood.

sometimes i just hang up. other times i let them go through their pitch, then say no.

By holding them up, you're reducing the number of people they call. Since they've already called you, this leads to less people being called. Get my drift?
 
I'm always tempted to be an ass to them but they've got MY number. So, they can just keep calling at all hours. So, I give them about 5s to start their pitch just in case it's a poorly worded customer service call from someone I need to hear.... then

I say 'not interested' and hang up. Lately I've been saying 'please put me on your do not call list', and then hang up. It seems to work with about 50% of them.

I had privacy director from Bellsouth/Supratelecom for a bit. It intercepts all private/out of area calls and directs them to a message box that they have to say their name and then I hear their name and can hit 1 for accept call or just hang up. While I had that I had almost no solicitations.

Then they (Supra) decided it wasn't part of the complete package and want $7/mo for it. I can hang up on a few solicitors a month for $7. But for free (well, included in my phone package) it was worth it.
