POLL: What cables should I use?

Hi all

I live in an apartment complex that gives us free basic cable. I have an HDTV that has been living off the QAM channels for the past year, and is hungering for more HD Channels, plus for only $20 a month I can upgrade. Taking it up on the offer, they're coming to install tomorrow.

On the phone, the woman I set it up with had no idea the model of receiver, nor if it needed / was able to use HDMI connections. Right now I have one open HDMI connection on the side of my TV (the other two are used by my PS3 and Computer).

Should I order an extra HDMI cable from monoprice for <$10 or just use the plethora of component cables I have lying around? BTW, no surround sound at the moment, just the TV speakers.

Willing to bet the tech that comes will have a general instruments with only composite (yellow cable) and RF out as an option. Also willing to bet you won't have the HD package.

In any event HDMI is the best choice as it brings up the audio. Then go from that to your reciever. However I wouldn't spend the money on the cable that might go unused. Instead let the D00D from the cable company install using component and upgrade later. Cheapest option.

Anyway, I don't have a receiver at the moment, so audio isn't a big issue. But I agree, I'm not buying anything from the tech. They offered me a $14 "Monster Cable" on the phone that I turned down without hearing what kind of cable.

You say you have a plethora of component cables lying around. Are you sure they're component (RGB) and not composite (RYW)?

Another vote for HDMI. On my Samsung TV, it actually makes a difference. When watching certain text on my 360 with component cables, you can very faintly see a slight ghosting surrounding text.

With my HDMI cable, its freaking crispy.

Get an HDMI cable through monoprice - less clutter, less mess. Otheriwse its been my experiance that in this area, the cable techs always have a componet cable to give you

Yes, positive. Used them with my old DVD players before I got the PS3.
