I just moved from the Hurricane Katrina ravaged Gulf Coast to Kingston, NY. I took a job for slightly higher pay working in a NOC from 12am-845am. Not great hours, and I'm not from around here, but there's good upward mobility.

I don't know how happy I am at the job. It's not horrible, but the people in my division are very stressed out. They freak out about every little thing and I'm not sure that I want to be a SysAdmin or Developer in these conditions. My social life is nice though, I have a big pool of friends with similar interests. I make $33K/yr before overtime ($30K + 10% shift differential).

My old job called up today and offered me a position working from 315pm to 1145pm. It's a little bit more of a leadership position than my old job down there, but it's exactly the same work. I literally wrote the book on it (This is literal, not a humourous misuse of the word literally). The pay is higher $36.6K ($32K + 10% shift differential). My rent down there would be about $150 more than I pay now. My family is there and it's my home area. I would have fewer friends (off the bat, at least), but would enjoy my job more.

That same old company may also offer me a different position. I haven't heard much about that.

The extra benefit is that I could go for my BS (I have an AA now) at the state school that is about 60 miles away.

How important is really enjoying your job? I know it sounds silly, but in five years I may like my job but only be making $40K. Here in NY I could be making $80K.

I'm not going to completely base my decision on this thread, it's a big one to make. I'm just looking for some additional thoughts.

Update:

Well, I called down to MS today and they offered me $38,896/yr plus moving expenses, plus they're going to try to reinstate my time with the company as far as benefits go.

Tough decision.

i'd say enjoying your job is pretty damn important. you spend probably most of your life working. i know for me my unhappiness at work overflows into other areas of my life as well.

Heh, I forgot about this thread.

I'm fine in either place, really. New York is very pretty and Mississippi is my home. The thing is that I just moved up here in June. I like my old industry a lot better, but they're going to have to pay me well.

I'm really on the fence here.

Not right now. I really don't need more than I have because I have a ton of work experience. Managment, customer service, programming, Unix, intel, anything I would need for either industry.

How much longer do you/would you have to go to finish it up?

About 55 credits. 2 years full time. I'm mostly lacking higher math classes (Advanced Calc, Topology, Abstract Algebra, etc)

I just got an email from an old co-worker. Apparently the rumor mill has started. They're trying to find me roommates. :D

Ditto. These are words of wisdom and my thoughts exactly. I believe the percentage is that 80% of people who go to their jobs daily either don't like or hate their current employment.

Nah, I'm too stubborn to have a roommate that isn't a close friend. I'm hard to live with. I've already found a good apartment for $699/mo.

I worked a job I hated for more than a year. At the time I needed the money and the experience, but I would never do it again. I would definitely go with the job that is more enjoyable.

You definitely have to weigh out the plusses and negatives of both situations. Having a job you like is a plus, but so is living somewhere you enjoy. Do you like snow? You'll probably get plenty of that in NY, which you undoubtedly didn't see much of in Miss. What about "culture"? Looks like you're about 2 hrs from Noo Jork Ceety ;) where there are tons of things to do. Makes a great weekend trip. Should be some decent skiing within a couple of hours as well.
Not gonna make any of the old tired jokes about "kultur in Mississippi...;) Only been there twice, and remember it to be very green and humid, with lots of very poor looking areas, but that's about it. The few pwople I've known over the years from Mississippi were, on the whole, good people however, but surprisingly, you find that kind everywhere you go...
As for comparing the jobs, you know better than we do, what is offered by both places. How about total living costs? Utilities, gasoline, rents, groceries, etc? Weather concerns as well...snow in the winter vs. hurricanes pretty much every year. Both will be hot & humid in the summer, but I'd expect Mississippi to be much more so than NY. (I grew up just a few miles from Kingston, in Springfield, Mass so I have an idea of what your weather is like.)

Well, I'm from the coast of MS. It's very different from the rest of the state. Casinos, palm trees, night clubs... Plus there's NOLA.

I'm just not sure.

Well, I just called them and told them that I'd like more money... and moving expenses...

My old (and possibly new) boss said that she'd talk to the big boss later this week. $18/hr base would really be nice. That'd be $19.80 after the shift differential.

Deciding to move is a hard thing to do. Lucky for both of us that we'd be moving to familiar areas.
