One of my best friends is in the Army reserve in washington state. Two weeks ago he had an 'emegency' drill and now he got an alert saying that he's going to be called up in January. Now, why would reserves be called up in peacetime? The fact of the matter is that the US army is preparing for war. The ball is rolling and Mr. Bush, the trigger happy guy that he is, seems to be pushing for war. Sadly it seems highly likely that war with Iraq is going to happen. I just hope that my friend doesn't die.

You can bet your ass it's going to happen. Absolutely no doubt about that. Rothchild once said that the best time to make money is when blood is on the street.

I think it's extremely likely, if not inevitable. What I'm really wondering is if we'll end up going to war with North Korea at some point.

It does seem inevitable, doesn't it? Six months back, I was hoping that the gov were hoping to use deterrence, and were building up a credible threat to achieve this. Just the threat alone seems to be paying dividends at the moment, with inspectors back in. Maybe this continued (and increasing) threat will be enough to achieve all our goals, but I doubt it.

Mind you, i was reading yesterday that despite all the hype, current force deployment levels in the gulf reqion are... completely normal.

Just thought - there has to be a war now - the news stations have started playing trailers for it! (with a john williams score...)

Welcome to ATOT. There have been lots of reserves called up since 9/11 and he may be being activated for normal rotation. Or not. If I'm not mistaken the first alert is to inform them that they might be activated. You may also want to caution your friend. It is not always a good idea to be running your mouth about your activation status.

It's gonna happen sometime in January...

Wanna bet? I still maintain that we 1. Are really not that close at all to invading Iraq and 2. Will not do so alone.

Sabre rattling, kids, sabre rattling.

Mr. Bush, the trigger happy guy that he is

Exactly what do you base this assertion on? I recall there were a lot of critics post 9/11 screaming that Bush was not sending in the troops fast enough. From what I see Bush has set a policy and patiently followed it and so far I see nothing to make me think he is "trigger happy".

Very true, and often overlooked.

These people are opposing a war that hasn't even happenned

But if you truly believe a war is wrong, shouldn't you be trying to prevent it? And there's no point trying to prevent it after it has happened...

I'm in complete agreement with you Dave. I've seen a lot of sabre rattling in my life and this is just more of it. Oh, I do think that war with Iraq will probably happen if Saddam doesn't continue towing the line with the inspections but Bush is making a lot of noise about it because the administration is fed up with the BS. Contrary to popular opinion on this board, I don't think Bush wants war but he'll go if forced to. Even if they find material breaches of the resolutions, I don't think that pulls any triggers unless Saddam gets beligerent about it.

My guess would be extremely likely.

Here's a little snippit from today's briefing. If you didn't see it, I strongly recommend you read the link. It's very entertaining.

<<Q We still don't know this key question, whether the U.S. and Britain are willing to go it alone in violation of what the U.N. --

MR. FLEISCHER: The President has said repeatedly on that question that the United States will assemble a coalition of the willing.

Q And that still stands?

MR. FLEISCHER: Absolutely.>>

The way I read that is President Bush is going to attack Iraq no matter what the UN (or the rest of the world) thinks. Is there another way to take that statement?

I don't believe anything the government says about Iraq. Not out of cynicism (which I have aplenty) but because they know Saddam and others are watching too. Not like the White House can have America Only broadcasts. DaveS just might be right about the war not being right around he corner, and I say that because Kissinger said in an interview on Japanese TV that he believes war will happen late Christmas/early spring. Kissinger saying something will happen makes me think twice about it. Not that Bush doesnt want to take out Saddam, but the time table and what will trigger it is beyond me right now. To answer the question, if nothing happens to Saddam (which is my qualifier here), then I think the chances of war are very high.
