If I were to buy a new VW Passat in a few years I'd probably buy a V6, no 4Motion, automatic and would prefer fabric seats over leather.

I haven't compared the specs/features/options between the GLS and GLX yet on Edmunds.com

Which offers the most bang for your buck for around $22,000 - $25,000 and remember I'm not going to pay MSRP or sticker or anywhere near that :D

GLS 1.8t is the best bargain. It comes very nicely loaded - power everything, disk brakes, abs, remote keyless entry, and cd player (I think now anyway). Unless VW changes their cloth, definitately go with the leather. The VW velour cloth is pretty crappy. It collects lint like mad, and isn't really all that nice. Leather is so much better. The 1.8t is power enough for you, especially if you are used to driving a 4 banger honda. It gets good gas milage too - 30+ MPG on the highway.

The GLX is just flat out expensive, and with a lot of options I could care less about. Power seats -whoopie, my GLS is comfortable as it is. Sunroof? BFD, $1000 option I could live without. CLimate control? Yank yank, I've done without for 10 years now, no need to get it now. Only nice thing is the 4motion, but I can get that on the GLS anyway.

I paid $20,000 for my '00 GLS wagon w/ the V6, leather, heated seats, auto tranny, and cd changer. It only had 35,000 miles on it. I was pretty happy with the deal.

Awesome thanks for the indepth reply. Fuel economy is important to me that's why I bought the 4 banger Accord. So maybe you're right the GLS 1.8t is the way to go.

Damn I wish I had a copy of last Saturday's Oregonian newspaper with me I wonder how much a 2002 VW Passat GLS 1.8t is.

Any major differences between the sedan and wagon other than the obvious? Might consider the wagon.

Wagons have better resale :)

I also think the wagons offer better back seat space. You have a 60/40 split bench in the back and you can fold down either side to accomidate long items and still have somebody ride in the back. The seats fold flat giving you a flat space to load things.

Wagons also draw less attention from the cops :) It *might* also be a smidgen shorter than the sedan, yet it offers vastly superior hauling.

I love my wagon...well at least the wifey-to-be does since she drives it most. :D

Ross, for you, who prefers fabric over leather, the GLS offers more bang for your buck.

For me, once I option out a GLS, it comes within a few dollors of a GLX, but without the automatic airconditioning, which I love in mine.

So for ME, a GLX is the best bang for my buck :)

And I love my 99 GLX so much, I'm actually considering trading it in on a 03 GLX or W8 next year. :D
