GOD NOOO!!! Not Erin Brockovich!!!

I hate that movie. Of cource part of that is because I saw it like 5 times. I took a 11 hour non-stop flight from San Fransisco to Frankfurt, Germany, and they only had Erin and THe hurricane. They kept playing them alternating. And, just as luck would have it, a month later on my way back they were playing it again...

aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!

Anyway... GO CTHD!!!

Traffic was also good. Enjoyed Gladiator, though I don't think it should win.

Gladiator: Overrated movie that for some reason gets the little boys panties all moist.:Q Watch Sparticus and Braveheart instead.

Erin Brockovich: Stupid TV movie of the week with a good performance from Julia Roberts.

Traffic: Almost great, but they make some plot missteps and it's not as good as the hype.

Chocolat: Haven't seen this yet, but my Mom liked it. She also liked the postively godawful Pay It Forward too, so factor that in.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Delivered the magic of the movies by taking us to places we've never seen and showing us sights we've never imagined. I think that the playa hatas who've been dissing this couldn't deal with the fact that the fighters were women, kept their clothes on and that Jet Li wasn't in it. Too bad for them. (But, they've got the utterly manly Gladiator to keep them panting.)

I'm obviously rooting for CT, HD, but I fear that it's Best Foreign Film nom will cost it the big prize. Get real. Do you really think that Gladiator will be remembered as long as other Bedt Pictures? Of course not.

Actually I do. Cinematically Gladiator is one of best films I've ever seen, and they couldn't have cast a better person than Russell Crowe (IMHO one of the 50 best performances in the last 10 years) to do the part. My vote goes to Gladiator for many reasons. The visuals, the sound effects, and the acting were all superb. It's not just coincidence that Gladiator is the DVD of choice for many audio/videophiles in testing systems.

gladiator was the only movie I remembered that was Good thus far all year. why won't it be remembered as best picture? I don't think a movie that's nominated for 12 Oscars an flick to be forgotten easily.

Ugh. I liked Gladiator and all, I mean... I'm a guy. Thing is, CTHD floored me! One of my favorite things is that the first time I saw it I liked it, I understood it, but I didn't understand it. It was both frustrating and intriguing. It stepped away from such a western view of entertainment and instead told a more tragic, yet triumphant tale. It's the depth that keeps it at the top of my list.

Chocolat - good film, EB - decent, but not my favorite, Traffic - Very good, but not quite "there".

Check out Rotten Tomatoes for a compilation of ratings on movies. Given that they gather such a wide range of reviews, their Tomatometer can give a loose idea of what to expect. CTHD has 85 reviews, 82 of them positive. Gladiator, on the other hand, has 88 reviews listed, 69 of them positive. I'm not a person to just go on reviews, but they can give a idea of the environment among the critics.

I have to agree that CTHD being nominated for Best Foreign Film could be the nail in its Best Picture coffin. I'd love to see the Academy vote for CTHD, though. Might be a good way to thumb it's collective nose at the absurd gratuitous money-making offerings regurgitated out by the major studios.

Yeah, Right.

Since I see and fight in the Colleseum every day it is ho hum. Probably never happened like the Holocoust.

CTHD may be a good fantasy but Gladiator blows it away. What movies used to be like.

PS: Sparticus and Braveheart were great also but watch Spartucus now and try not to laugh.

Well, Titanic should be forgotten, but unfortunately, it won't be.

You really think so, dm? I thought Crowe did a fantastic job in the role, but it was not the kind of role that showcases acting ability IMO. He had relatively limited amounts of dialogue considering his screen time and some of that was yelling. Although I think he did bring a lot to the role, I wouldn't put it that high on my list.
In fact, I'd say Joaquin Phoenix had a better performance in terms of "good acting". He was awesome.
