I have all three, but American Express' customer service is outstanding. It's a business card (I think it's called Corporate Executive) so I don't know if that makes a difference but, IMO, it's the best out of the 3.

visa, it's everywhere you want to be
for everything else there's mastercard
discover, the card that pays you back
american express, don't leave home without it.

I have a Discover Platinum card to get that 1% back. That's pretty cool. I have a MasterCard for everything else because not everyone takes Discover (nor Amex), especially when traveling overseas.

Just like in web hosting there is no one perfect service for everyone.

Each cc offers something unique but in my experience both personal and professional:

VISA > MasterCard > Amex > Discover Card > Capital One

AMEX - There is no comparison to the other 2 for the customer service they provide. Get the Optima or Blue with no annual fee. Good travel fringes on the AMEX cards too, rental car collision coverage etc. I, however, use my Visa for everything for the cash back (gas, food, beer) and pay it off every month.
