Duncan will contain Gasol. Spain aparently is not as good an outside shooting team as the others so if US plays like it did against Lithuania, they can win.

Quota from NY Post
"I loved getting our butts kicked by Italy," Popovich, the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs and assistant on this U.S. Olympic basketball team, said yesterday after the Americans finished up preliminary play by trouncing Angola. "I loved watching Puerto Rico hurt us. And losing to Lithuania. To me, that's all about the education of this team as international players."

There was a pause, a spasm of nervous laughter, as Popovich's small audience waited to see if he was serious or putting them on. He was serious, as it turned out.

"Here's the thing," he said. "You can talk all you want about how much you respect your opponent. You can talk all you want about how hard the adjustment to international rules and international officials is going to be. You can talk all you want about how hard it's going to be to face all those stifling zone defenses. But until you do that, until you get your butts kicked as hard as we did, you really don't know."

Popovich smiled, like a man privy to his own joke.

"I have a feeling," Popovich said, "that this team is gonna be plenty ready. They're already understanding that this is like the NCAA Tournament now ? one loss and you're done. This isn't the NBA playoffs, where you can have a bad game and still come back and win a seven-game series. This is one-and-done."

So they are only playing one more game?

They are about to start the single elimination tournament with a poor seed. It's like asking if the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference can even win the NBA title.

If they start playing well, they have as good of chance as anyone. If they keep playing the same, they have no chance.

I'd love to see the US go home without a medal in basketball.

NOT because I don't want them to ever win again, I just think it will add to the excitement of international basketball for the next few years if things are really competitive (which they have been this year!)
