Should I make the transition from my Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200GB 16MB Cache HDD to the 74GB Raptor?

Not worth it IMO. Raptors do very little for performance, and its not worth the cost and the decrease of HD space.

wait untill the new hard drives come out. they will outperform the raptor very soon, and cheapness will be your friend.

I would never make a "switch" like that. Now, having the raptor for boot/games/programs, sure. Then have the 200GB for storage.

well, i would have sold the hd to my cuz for $100 and then would have added $70 or so of my own money towards the purchase. theman, are faster 10k rpm hdd's coming out soon that are sata based? i havent heard of such yet. if so, share the wealth of knowledge. :)

what new hdds? and in what areas will they beat a raptor at? please post a link to this information.

the raptors performance is largely based, among other things, by its spindle speed which results in lower seek times and are noticeable if you use your computer quite a bit.

it really depends on your usage but unless you are doing quite a bit of disk intensive activity i wouldn't do it. if you made the raptor the system/app drive and the 200GB as the storage drive, now that would be the ideal setup.

:) One thing I like the Raptor for is when using AdAware, Spybot, or any other spyware program there was a noticable improvement in the time it takes to finish. Just my 2 cents.

MS Windows loads on 2 passes of the green boot bar ^^

Then again, all I have is AOL IM, ICQ, and windows volume bar on startup :p

I currently have a 73.4 raptor for boot/games. All media (music/movies/books) are on storage 120gb storage. I've used maybe 40 gigs of the raptor and 110 of the storage ^^ (aka I need a bigger storage drive soon from rampant 4 gig downloads of Miyazaki/Ghibli animes)

Nope.
If you want real speed, then get a decent SCSI drive.

...being a scsi person, he would have to go the newest gen 15k rpm drives, which are ~$230 plus a card and cable and it would be 36GB, the raptor seems to be a decent drive for its price

I own both HDD you inquire. I have the 74GB Raptor as my system HDD and a 300GB Maxtor Diamond 10 (16MB buffer) as storage. Unless you have crazy habbits (like me) to reinstall the system every 2 months or something like that don't go for the Raptor. When I install the system I feel a huge direrence on the Raptor compared to normal HDD but in rest the diference is not visible. It's there but you don't feel it. Not enough that you can be satisfied for loosing $70 and 120GB.

Yeah, I know ;) but if he wants decent speed plus a longer lifespan....
