the company i work at employees about 500 computer techs around the country. each one takes care of about 10-20 of our retail locations.

we posted a .zip file on our intranet and asked them to extract it onto the local server in the retail office.
the instructions we clear, but not detailed. we didn't write a 3 page document on how to unzip a file on Windows, step by step for a "user", these people are supposed to be computer techs.

they are paid $10-$14 depending on the area of the country and skills, etc. we don't get too many people with experience because of the low pay. we don't need computer scientists, just basic "Computer techs". ie read instructions, know micrsoft windows enough to follow the directions without calling our call center all the time for help.

the instructions basically said:

download this file-> file1.zip

unzip it to c:\winnt\system\directory

Of course... zipping/unzipping is a basic windows skill... just like the commoner knows what to do with a .doc file.

And BTW, you suck at teh poll creation.

most of them of course accomplished the task without a problem. it isn't like they are 100% idiots. most do a good job for us.

but today, our group got a case referred to us. we handle 2nd/3rd level support (whatever, they keep changing it around)

one of these field techs called the call center for help with this task

between the tech and the call center, they couldn't handle it . so they sent the case to us to try and "solve" :Q

I work as a computer tech, just got hired, starting pay @ $7/hour. I am a good technician, even by the standards of this board; I wish I got paid that much.

Are you part time or something???? That is VERY low pay for a computer tech. I started out at 9 an hour. Topping out at 13.25 right now.

hiring isn't done centrally, it is done by the local business manager.

this partly accounts for the variety in skill levels of the people hired.

these techs don't work directly for the IT dept, which is part of the problem as well
