I am wondering when u guys need to drive to a unknown place,

do u use traditional atlas or the print out from mapquest.com to find a place or both ?

It seems to me that Mapquest sucks for detailed directions.

While atlas suck in small print. So I reference with each other...

I am also wondering how useful will a car GPS system (a small 5-6" LCD) for navigation

Both. Mapquest sucks for detailed directions. I use it to get a general idea.

It sucks if you live in Canada. They have script errors when you try to print out text only for Canadian maps.

Mapquest and Mapblast never fail to...well, fail in the LA metro area. I have yet to find an occasion where it didn't totally foul up directions to the freeway, and once on the freeway, insisted that I take a missing overpass or extremely inefficient route.

I have and always will rely on my faithful Thomas Guide. That way, if I get lost the only person to blame is myself. And I never get lost. :)

I wont go on a car trip without an Atlas in the back seat.

Mapquest and stuff cant predict or know all road construction stuff, so if you have an Atlas, often you can find a quick alternate route.

Coming back from Vegas last year, I was going through Albuquerque on I-40, and saw a sign that ALL of I-40 was CLOSED from 9PM to 6AM. WTF??? The whole freekin Interstate was closed? There were semis backed up at least 5 miles from what I could tell. Whipped out the Atlas, found an alternate route through town, and popped out on the other side of construction in 15 minutes.
