I dont really have a particular model in mind as of yet, im just curious which one you all would choose. My top choice right now is probably either the Inspriron 8100 for around $1350 or a comparable toshiba.

Please also post if you have either company lappy and what you thought (and what i should avoid)...

Thanks! :)

Long ago the company had a Toshiba notebook, and it sucked.
Nowadays we have only Dell notebooks, and they may suck, but at least we get support on them.

Is it worth it to spend the extra $119 or so to get the 3 years warranty (instead of 1)?

Everybody voted for Dell because they are inundated by commercials from them. Toshiba makes a far superior product, but they don't advertise as much. Most people are just lemmings.

I have a Toshiba laptop, and I'm really happy with it. I haven't had any problems with it since I got it last September, so I don't really know about their support, but otherwise it's been a good experience owning it.

I don't really know much about the quality of Dell products, but I'd vote for Toshiba.

I have a Toshiba Satallite 2800-S202 and it has been working great. I've had it for... 9 months and I haven't had a problem so far. I'm a comp guy so I've formatted this thing about 30 times and reinstalled all different kinds of windows on it. It took them a while to get win2000 drivers for all their components, but I just installed XP and everything was good to go.

Pentium III 700Mhz, 14.1 inch TFT, 128MB, 10.0GB, 8X DVD, 56K, Windows ME.

I got it from my dad for a graduation gift and he says he got it for about 900 bucks. Knowing him, I know how...

Anyway, its been a great laptop so far. On many a trips away from my computer, its been used as a jukebox/movie theatre. I also use it to test software before putting it on my main rig.

Yes.

I've had several break down in their second year, and if you have 1 year instead of 3 on it you'll then be paying the standard repair fee, which is about $400. (Not sure, it's 450 Euros here)

No, not necessarily.

You can get TWO years (1 extra year warranty free) just by purchasing it with a premium credit card (VISA Gold, for example).

And get a Dell, Dude!

I think dell laptops are more configurable. I have laptops from hp, toshiba, dell, and compaq. I have the dell 8100 and it looks sorta bulky, not as sleek and stylish but it's a desktop replacement. The compaq presarios are really stylish and thinner than dells as well as Toshiba but compaq warranties are non-transferrable, I'm not sure if the same can be said about Toshiba warranties. Dell warranties CAN be transferrable, all you need is either the contact information OR the invoice number. I've had problems with hp laptops although they do look nicer than the rest. But that's just me :) Go with dell, they have soooooooo many parts and accessories you can buy if you're ever going to need to configure it.

From what I've read lately (in these threads), Dell's sales support is great, but their customer support is going to hell.

You're right, dell has it on their website right now. The I8200's pentium 4 with geforce4 go. But the price is somewhere between 2k-3k

I'm afraid that I don't have either laptop - actually, I don't have any laptop - but I thought that you might like some insight on the quality I've noticed so far. First of all, if you get a Dell, there's no way you should ever get anything below the 3 year warranty. I can't tell you the number of components I've had replaced in the time following one year. Dell technical support is a nightmare. I consistently am on hold for more than 30 minutes, the people I talk to make me to try things that I've already tried or know wouldn't solve the problem. There have been days where I've spent well over 3 hours on the phone with them. Everyone that I talk to about buying a computer, I recommend to stay well away from that company.

Just my $.02.

Yea, thats gonna be more than i can afford right now... The watered down 8100 or a midline 4100 should fit the bill just fine...

Yea, ive heard some bad stories about them as well, i wish laptops were as easily 'fixable' as desktops because then i wouldnt give a crap :) Hopefully i wont have to use any tech support, but if something breaks, i'll have to...
