My other thread.

Thought I'd create a poll for it, as it seems the four boards in mind are these : FIC VA-503+, EPOX MVP3G2/G5, ASUS P5A-B and SOYO 5-EHM.

Which do you think is best? If the poll isn't up by the time you reach this, please just post your vote and vote on the poll later if you wish.

Thanks... (may take a min, haven't used the poll feature much)

I hate the Via MVp3 chipset.

I had a Gigabyte GA-5AA (nearly identical to the Asus P5A-B) baby AT on ALi Alladin V and my room mate had Asus P5A (the ATX version of the -B) and both were excellent boards for Super7. We also put together a system for my uncle on the Asus P5A-B and it's run perfectly for him. I'm going to say Asus P5A-B.

I've heard alot of good thing about Soyo, and if the Soyo board is ALi Alladin V you might want to try it, but I think the Via MVP3 chipset is awful...I've seen many problems with that Chipset...I woudln't use it.

Edit: The 5-ehm uses the ETEQ 82C6638AT/6629 AGP chipset, I've never heard of that chipset before..
www.soyousa.com they have a handy search utility, tell it you want K6-3 mobos and hit search.
It has 72pin SIMM slots? hehehe 😛

Edit: I'll still vote for the Asus.

I haven't had any problems that were related/caused to/by the MVP3 chipset which I had in that VA-503+ of mine, but the board is now dead.

I'm really considering the Asus P5A-B. Anybody actually have this and use a K6-III+? If nobody can give me a reason not to get this board, I'll go right ahead (if I can, hehe). 🙂

The Soyo ETEQ chipset is the same as the VIA MVP3, just licensed by Soyo to put their own brand name on it. The drivers you install even come with the VIA name on the installer (and I think they point you to the VIA web site for updates).

I've never had any problems per se with VIA chipsets, but since that's all I've used since my iHX chipset motherboard, I'm probably biased. However VIA has always been better rated than ALi chipsets in performance and quality (or at least recently).

I've had the Soyo 5EMA+, and then got rid of it and bought an EPoX MVP3G5. The EPoX tended to be a much better board, though it did cost a tad more. When I swapped, I didn't reinstall or anything, I just deleted everything from device manager and reloaded drivers. I don't recall that I had any serious problems. The 2MB cache was nice, whether I really noticed it or not (CPU and video card limited real performance).

Just remember, ALi = ACER. There's not many things with the word Acer in them that people here would buy.
