No. Iraq was never going to work short of multi-decade nation building and trillions of dollars in investment; and likely splitting the nation into 3rds.

We should keep an active intelligence network there and a military presence in nearby allied nations. If someone threatens us, they get a drone up their ass. Rinse and repeat until they figure out post-medieval civilization.

Hell No. Do you really want to have troops there forever?

We have our own problems, we shouldn't be wasting money that we don't have.

Ya..I suppose it don't work if you just go shooting off cruise missiles willy nilly.
Once again if only all the US generals had you to direct them, I'm sure the world would be peaceful by now

I'm not really sure why the sarcasm. You responded about cruise missles when I'm talking about sending a message we're done F'ing around after 9/11. Do you know how dumn a response that was? Cruise missles? Cruise missle what exactly? How many cruise missles? For how long? Which targets? How did you know to pick those targets? Is destroying those targets going to send any message to an evil dictator safe in his domain other than, Let me open up the arms catalog and see what I'll be buying to replace those?

This has nothing to do with armchair general, this just has to do with Reality.

No need. We already killed Saddam and in so doing brought peace to Iraq and the region, giving them democracy and everything. At some point they need to deal with their own problems.

I'm perfectly ok with sitting back and watching Muslims kill each other. If they don't value their own lives, why should I?

You may not like what comes to power when dust settles. AQ type nation state. What mindset immigrates west. We'll be back for sure if a pluralistic society is not established.

There are only 33,000 US service members currently in Afghanistan, due to shrink down to about 9,500 by the end of the year. Meanwhile there are 4.2 million total US military service members (active, guard & reserve) over half of whom have never deployed to combat. A little Iraq would do them some good.

I still believe all you ever did in Afghanistan was keep the wifi going. ( after you were that Afghan Generals secretary )
Don't you have some overweight girls to make fun of and then record in your diary?

sounds like a great opportunity for china. everything there is already broken. they can send in the PLA, get a little fighting experience, buy out any western oil contracts in return for keeping the peace as brutally as they want.

Imperialism is what our presence is in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Vietnam add-up to. Control and domination are costing this industry-depleted nation more than we even have to spend. We "borrow" money to invade other countries. When this govt. decides to put our money back into education, pay for our healthcare and feed the millions of poor and hungry here, we will have some sort of start towards the future. If one of these " terrorist" nations wanted to pull some heinous act, it would be all-too-easy to commit. They don't and they aren't. Look up the list of industrialized nations that give Universal Healthcare to their people. Virtually every one including even Cuba. C'mon look into what you are personally doing as individuals to become involved in another wasted move into Iraq. Someday you all need to realize that a lot of people are milking a military living out of the govt. very much the same as the "disability" malingerers do.

If the oil is important to our economy, then yes. Who wants to pay more for gas? It's already a rip off as it is.

Otherwise, no.

And when the troop pullout occurred, they had to know this was going to happen. So this uprising is not exactly a surprise to anyone involved, is it?

What I find interesting, is the fact these SISI insurgents seem well armed and organized. Which makes me think they are being directed, funded and equipped by a large country nearby we have pissed off a lot lately. And it's definitely not Iran or China. Can anyone guess what country this is? This "insurgent" payback is what happens when we screw around on the world stage in other countries politics where we aren't welcome, and we don't belong in the first place.

you heard it here first, ATOT... ground invasion of Iraq imminent.

Not surprised at all. They need to urgently secure the oil wells, oil ports and the capitol. The rest of the country is a lot less important to US interests.

Unless we're prepared to put at least 250K troops on the ground for the next 10 years we shouldn't put boot one on the ground.

Take both of your figures x5 and maybe. Counterinsurgency works, but you better plan on being there for the next few generations.

As a vet (and reservist), I hope to heck we don't go back in. I'm glad we have who we have in the White House.
