ok i know how you all feel and myself included about OEM system. so lets hear what you have to say about who's the best, or in some cases the best of the worst. let me know if i missed anything

Alienware?

Dell I guess if you mean a big branded computer company...I can't stand OEMs at all, but lately I've been looking at laptops and OEM is really the only way to get lappies...and Dell's are the most attractive I think...so I'll vote Dell.

Out of all the choices you had listed I chose e-machine. Why? I'll tell you why. For what you pay it is actually a decent PC. Compaq, is by far, the worst! Sure, they have great support, but they need to! Their products (excluding the ipaq 3600 series) suck! Dell, well, they suck too. Sure they make a somewhat decent PC but I think they are a little overpriced. Had you put Alienware I would have voted for them. One KICKASS PC! Thoroughly tested before they ship it to you. Thats dedication.

Dell their service is in my onpinion the best. However for servers no-one can beat compaq. Stay away form their desktops thouhg. :)

Alienware. Primarily because of their testing and because they install Windows sans garbage files. I used to use Dell but the entire desktop is filled with so much junk (offers, wizards, guides).

I have setup and installed about 300 Dell's over the last few months where I work. I have had only one problem with them. Running Win2000, if you switch profiles, the machine will reboot between 1-3 times when you try to log in using a different profile. This doesn't ALWAYS happen, but enough to be annoying. We just received another 40 last week. I have since setup 35 and NONE of them seem to have this problem. The PC's are Optiplex GX-110's. The Motherboard has changed since the ones that reboot, there is now a sound card built into them. They seem to be rock stable though.

Definitely Dell. They use good components in their systems, offer amazing tech support, even have the option to get 3 year on site support. A company which put out a sub-par product would not even offer a warranty like this if they couldn't make money from it. Dell just knows they make a quality product. For my parents Dell delivered an awesome PC. I of course prefer to build my own PC, but this poll isn't about that.

I'm surprised there are still some Gateway supporters. I thought they'd lost all loyalty but I guess that isn't the case from the looks of this poll.

Dell is my first choice.

I also have had very good results using Micron computers.

In my experience, I would not recommend that anyone buy a Dell. We have about 50 here at work, along with some of their dockable laptops. Notwithstanding user error, I'm not impressed by their reliability- ESPECIALLY those cursed laptops.

If it were me, I'd go Gateway or HP. But, I cannot go. You cannot make me go!

I just build em' myself.

Dell is probably the best, but since they don't have any AMD cpus, I went for Micron which is just as good IMO.

Well I bought my Dell in Oct of 98 and it has served me well. For about a year I could leave it running for weeks at a time without having to reboot, i consider that pretty damn reliable. Its getting old now but it still works ok, run out of ram win lame WinME all the time though. I added a voodoo3, some ram, and a bigger hard drive, but other than that it hasn't needed any major addons. I wouldn't buy another one for myself, but if you don't want to build one, buy Dell. If you are considering alienware you probably know something about computers and are better off building your own for less money.
