I'm undecided.

On one hand, who are we to say that two wrongs make a right in this case? How can we possibly say that it's ok for us (the gov't) to kill, but not for anyone else? It's not logical.....

but then again, on the other hand (and I have 6 of them;))when I hear about what these guys do, I get so filled with rage that I practically get dizzy.

And yes, in case you noticed, I do enjoy starting threads/polls that everyone has an opinion on and people will argue with each other over. Hey, it's all for the sake of good conversation, a good ol' fashioned debate:).

Yes.

BUT, only in cases where there is hard, concrete evidence that incriminates the defendant. No circumstantial evidence or crap like that.

With a punishment of this degree, we must be absolutely sure that the defendant is actually guilty.

I'm undecided.

On one hand I have absolute contempt for anyone who commits a capital crime, and I say fry 'em. But on the other hand, who are we to play God? Ghandi said:

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind

I am undecided. It really depends on the circumstances on a cases per case basis...

I don't see it as playing God, more like using the power God has giving the government. If there is hard evidence, I say kill 'em. In Australia our laws are so crap. If someone kills someone and they get 'life', they get out after 10 or so years. Seems the government doesn't know what life is :| Yet if you scam money of the government you get like 20 or 30 years in jail. The system is screwed! Murderers should pay the price for what they do!

Leave it up to the victim's surviving family? ;) The ancient idea of punishment fitting the crime is a good one. Steal? Cut off a hand. Kill? Right back at ya baby!

Trouble is we've discovered some on death row who weren't conclusively guilty. Public confidence in government and even law enforcement is declining. I'd rather not entrust a corrupt body with the power to unjustly terminate members of the population.

So as some have said, make damn, damn sure the criminals are guilty. Then the states call the shot.

It's easy to say "eye for an eye" is bad....until something happens to you or a close friend/family member.

As far as guilt is concerned, just let the CIA interrogate the convicted murderers. There is nobody who will not confess if truly guilty.

rousseau thought of it as you giving up some rights (the right of revenge on someone for harming you or your family) to the state upon entering into a society. so from a philosophical standpoint we say its okay for the government to do something in our place.

the real question is, would we do the death penalty if we weren't in the state? thats the question to answer. here in texas gov. perry is insisting on DNA testing as much as possible to reinforce innocence or prove guilt, hes fasttracking a bill for it, called the current situation a crisis. bit different than what bushy was saying.

i say if theres no plausible way they're not guilty, and what they did was really terrible like torture or a killing spree or killing a cop, strap 'em to the bench and inject 'em.

Pacfanweb, were you perhaps a professional torturer in a past life?

Penalty by death for a crime is an idea as old as time itself it seems. I'm undecided on the issue, but sometimes when you get a particularly nasty crime like a kid killer or something like that then I tend to think the person who can commit such a terrible crime deserves death.

However, if the death penalty is the right thing, what sbout those who actually have to carry out the sentence. It must be hard for them to take a life, even if the person deserves it.

I'm not for it, unless the convicted chooses it as an alternative to life imprisonment. Then it would free up another jail cell which is always good.

i'm opposed because:

1) too many people have been executed who were later found innocent (even 1 is too many). go to a few trials for defendants who have public defenders & you'll understand.
2) it's immoral (i'm pro-life all the way).
3) it's far more expensive than keeping someone in prison for life.

I dont believe that its more expensive then keeping them in prison for life. I know the electric bill would be very high for an electric chair Death but still keeping someone alive for life cost a lot.

The only problem with having the death penalty is how long it takes for them to follow through after the verdict. It should be *guilty* *sentence* *chair/needle/stoning/hanging, or save us all some time and money and put a bullet through his/her head, etc...* In that order and just as swift!

[edit]I think some people are taught that you get a free ride when you commit a crime and basically you do. You get 3 squares a day, free cable, free gym membership, free clothes....etc. If your to spend life in jail you should loose all human rights. live in a 6' x 6' room and be fed the minimum for existence. Criminals live better than some who work for a living![edit]

I'm against the death penalty for reasons I already stated in an earlier thread of mine, called something like "Capital Punishment or Labour Camps?".

In short it comes down to this:

> Killing someone for doing something awful (murdering someone) may seem wise (get them out of society & let them feel what they did to their victim(s)), but it's one of the dumbest things you can come up with:
* The death penalty is more expensive than putting someone in jail for the rest of his/her life, unless it's done like in China (quick 'judgement', immediately executed with a neckshot (quick and said to be 'nearly painless').
* We are wasting valuable free man-power by killing them.
* For the criminal it's only one execution and it's over for him/her (unless you believe in some afterlife and bla bla...). The family of the victim will have to live with the fact that the murderer escaped out this life.

Statement:

> The 'Big' criminals (murderers etc.) should be put in a Labour Camp (Soviet style) and will have to work there till either they're released when their penalty is over, or they die.

With 'Soviet style' labour camps, I don't mean cozy vacation camps. Look up some pics or descriptions of those camps, and you'll agree that the death penalty is for sissies compared to those camps.

If they are dumb enough to commit a crime then I say screw 'em.

Although, that labor camp idea is intriguing, depending on what you'd have them do.

I think the judicial system needs a little more overhaul. Too many criminals getting off and too many innocents getting put away.

I think there should be a death penalty, but there has to be concrete evidence that they commited the crime.

My problem with the death penalty is that it's final; there's no room for error. I would be much more behind it if I knew everyone on death row was 100% guilty.

"Oops, he was innocent. Get out the lightning rods Dr. Frankenstein."

<< using the power God has giving the government >>

So you don't vote right ? AFAIK living in democracy means that the power of the government is given to it by the people. Or at least it should be that way. ;)

Konichiwa makes a very good point.
I guess I'm against it, though like many others it angers me to hear the atrocities some psychos do.
