The 386 was the greatest CPU of all time. A true engineering genius, it moved along the world of computer further than any chip in time.

8086 and 386. They were the basis for almost everything we still run. The x86 platforms were built around them. We are talking about the best chips ever, the ones that made the most change in computing. these 2 have my vote.

I'm going to have to say Duron. It has by far THE BEST price/performance ratio ever. It completely rapes a Celeron, and can compete quite well with an Athlon or PIII and the price can't be beat.

Zilog Z80 series. There must be more of them being used than all others combined. Everything from fridges, coffee pots, microwaves, at least 4 or 5 in every car, millions in process control in industry. I think I have seen somewhere that they are already available in 64bit versions. Monitors, VCR's, TV's, CD players, singing fish, musical greeting cards, answering machines, security systems, toys of all kinds. The list is endless.

This thread is really geared towards the x86 side (maybe it should be "the best x86 cpu&quot. My pick is the DEC/Compaq/Samsung Alpha... well the 21x64 series'.

I believe, but i could be wrong, that Cray's use(d) Alphas.

Also, that list should be consolidated... there isnt much difference between Athlon Classic and Thunderbird, P3 Xeon and regular P3, and all those K6x varients... not enough difference to justify giving each of them a category.... IMHO. If i missed some chips... please let me know but I believe that the above should at least have a chance. I added the Palm's CPU (Dragonball Z) because it is used quite a bit and has made possible this Palm revolution.

I don't think anyone voted for the &quot;CRUSOE&quot; chips because we have not really much of an indication of the speed they can produce...

If the vote were for the most important CPU ever made, it would be a tossup between the

- Zilog 80 (for a breakthrough, reliable design that still powers calculators and gameboys and a host of other technology)

- the Motorola whatsit that powered the first Amigas (for proving that a desktop alternative to Intel architecture is technologically, if not economically, viable)

- the 8086 (for the incredibly versatile and powerful x86 architecture which many today are too quick to bury)

- and the 80386 (for an elegant 32bit extension to x86)

But since the vote is for the best CPU ever made, the answer is clear: The AMD Duron.

The Duron has the distinction of being the best CPU in the history of the universe. Why? Because, to any sane person, best means best value, and the Duron's price/performance ratio is unmatched by anything. Plus, we shouldn't forget its phenomenal overclocking capabilities, which are just as good, proportion-wise, as the Celeron 300a: both chips can easily achieve a 50% overclock.
