Poll: The best CPU ever

lets hear your opinons on the best cpu ever made...it doesn't matter what criteria, overclockability or stabilty or voltage or sse/3d now extensions.....i've tried to include all the processors that would be worth voting for...let me know if i miss anything

I'd have to pick the 80286. I know it wasn't particularly advanced, but it was the chip in my very first computer, an IBM PS/2 Model 25. (The all-in-one PS/2.) Judging from what I have seen (which is not all that much) it appears to have been the first widespread chip used in truly "personal" computers. i.e. it made the transition from office to living room. I've gotta give the credit to the chip that I feel started us all down this road. A close second is the Zilog Z80 processor. Designed in the '70s they're still alive and well powering TI calculators.

I can tell this thread is going to be filled with OC kiddies in no time.

I'd have to pick the DEC Alpha also. These things were way before their time and had loads of power. They can still beat any x86 class cpu.

Pentium without a doubt. Most people dont know that it was THE chip that started it all (new core 6). Its was the first chip to feature a true superscallar pipeline, and many other superior technologies. There would never be a PIII, or an Athlon without the original Pentium.

All chips and no chips are the best, depending on what you would be using it for, the answer would differ. If you want an answer as to what chips uses the most advanced design, my choice for that title would be the DEC Alpha (especially the ones not released yet).

BTW, i really dig those Potato chips. (oh, i know, you are all yelling "the guy made a joke, he has been sitting there all serious and sh*t since he joined, but now he is finally starting to lighten up." well you are WRONG, i'm still serious, i really like potato chips)

Well, Pro is a souped up Pentium (with exeption of SIMD).

Pentium is the Intel 80586. Head of R&D was Vladimir Pentovski. In just few months AMD and Cyrix started cloning it like crazy.

Seriously though - I'm going to go with DEC Alpha. Though I'm not really a pro Alpha person, there's no getting around the fact that Alphas can outperform any other chip in production. Too bad there's not much software for it.

I'm gonna go with the C366@550. At the time the best chip you could get your hands on was a P3-550, and the memory/front side bus's were nowhere near as taxed then. So with this cheap overclock you could literaly have the absolute top of the line performance for about $100.

The C300@450 was also a very very important chip because it made overclocking a rediculously painless procces, and brought many a person into the OC'ing fold.

Without these chips, the hardware comminuity we are a part of now would be much much smaller, and would be a much more hobbyist orientd market than the current very proffesional market it is.
