It doesn't strike me as actually being a threat on the President's life. It's more like a desire or a political cartoon in poor taste. Now, if it had said "I'm going to kill Bush" or something more like that, it would be more reasonable to interpret it as a threat.

No one threatens the President of the United States with death. No political or party offiliation discussion is necessary, period. For a US citizen to do it, that's treason as far as I'm concerned. Mandatory prison time would be fitting.

Absolutely.

Sorry, everything does NOT fly in reality. You cant just do anything you want to liberals.
Sorry! You cant kill people (though you currently do with abortion) and you cant threaten the President of the great nation (yes conservatives view this as a great nation) of the United States of America.

Take your flag burning asses back to the USSR to your socialist haven, you dirty hippies.

The parents of this girl FAILED to properly raise their daughter and are teaching her treasonous ways.
Ah, the liberals life I suppose.

You seem more like the type that would enjoy an authoritarian regime...

What would happen if every myspacer created a similar page? Obviously, they wouldn't question every single person. Would they hire more SS or would they actually prioritize based on which they felt were actual viable threats?

Yes, the Secret Service had every right to investigate this for reasons that have been stated many times.

Of course she has to be questioned. Do people really think it's that hard for a terrorist to sign up a myspace account under a false name? They have to find out if she was the creator of the images/text, and if she was acting on behalf of someone else (parents/friends/boyfriend/etc). I think it's perfectly fine for them to pull her out of class to do it, and not give the parents time to coach her on answers. They didn't harm her or beat her, they asked questions that hurt her feelings. Boo-hoo. Her rights were not ignored, and if this was actually the kid of a terrorist who was organizing an Al-Queda strike, we would all be cheering that the Service caught them.

Without reading the thread:

Yes, they are right to investigate every possible threat seriously. Keep in mind that the US was given a tipoff that the 9/11 attacks would happen, but chose not to act fast enough or take them seriously. In all seriousness, who do you think would have a better chance of getting close to the president without suspect, a 14 year old girl or a middle aged man? (even if both were average looking, white, middle class run of the mill citizens)

No, her parents should not have been included because they could only interfere with the questioning. In this sort of situation you can only imagine that the parents would just be pissed off about the whole thing and delay the questioning with their confidence in their daughter and being an extra set of mouths talking that don't need to be. Not to mention that the average American parent would probably waste time blabbing on about rights that don't exist and lawsuits.

Maybe instead of bitching about being present for this, they should have been present when she was on the internet doing these sorts of things.

Uh... Read the thread, genuis.

You may not use your rights to violate the rights of another.

This is why threats, libel/slander and incitement are illegal and/or actionable.

Yes & yes, althought they were in their rights according to California law. Q & A link

The SS told or implyed to the school adminstrator that they had her parents permission, which I think is BS. Congrats Bush-holes you just wasted thousands of my taxpayer dollars and created an activist!

I don't do MySpace, but if I did I'd add her as a friend.

Finally someone who takes things logically in context rather than seeing things in black and white.

Yeah, because terrorist masterminds would organize an al queda strike, publically over the internet on one of the world's most popular site.
Do you have any sense of logic?

This entire thread is ridiculous.

"Kill Bush" is not a threat. If you look at statutes, you'll see where it falls short of communicating a threat. It's stupid, irresponsible satire, but it's not a threat.

But I'm more "amused" by amused's sudden preaching about person A's rights infringing on person B's.... after he told me I was an idiot for using the same argument in regards to smoking bans.

Typical Amused. The real indigantion here is that someone said something negative about his personal hero, the chimp who wipes his rear with the Constitution on a daily basis. There's some irony for you.

My gawd... you have quite the stiffy for me, don't you?

First off, smoking bans violate private property rights. A person who is bothered by smoke has no right to force a private property owner to comply with their wishes. Your argument that allowing smoking on private property violates the rights of non-smokers was absurd.

And I'm sorry, but I have no personal hero... and if I did it certainly wouldn't be the president. If it were anyone it would be Jefferson, Rand or Friedman.

"Kill Bush" along with the violent drawing is both a threat, and an incitement. Neither is protected speech... never has been.

How is this a threat?

Did the girl send it to him..

Did the girl ask him to look at it

Thought crimes?

Why does he deserve to live more than the 50.000 plus people he murdered in a country that never attacked us?

umm the girl wasn't arrested and locked away at Guantanamo. The Secret Service went to the school, questioned her, gave her a stern talking to, and left her to her business. Part of the Secret Service's job is investigating any potential threat to the President, regardless of whether it turns out to be real or not. You think the Secret Service enjoys wasting its time and resources to go scold some teenage girl? Believe me, there's plenty better for them to be doing, but on the .00001% chance this girl went crazy and took a shot at the President, the nation would be up in arms that the Secret Service didn't investigate the "threat." Hell, we'd have a Congressional MySpace 500 page report blaming the Secret Service.

The girl is a retard, plain and simple. No sympathy here.

Ignore him. Obviously he's incapable of making a coherent argument, and you can't win with people like that.

Back on the topic - I don't care about your age, race, color, religion or any other type of variable; if you make a threat against the President or anything that could cause harm to national security, you should be investigated.

Well said. This shouldn't even be a discussion people, I don't care if they didn't ask the parents first. We already wasted tax dollars investigating this dumb girl, that's it.

Got children?

I wonder how many US Citizens feel the same way she feels? Does that make them dumb too?
