Right. The Al-Qaeda hasn't killed Bush yet but a 14-year-old White Californian Girl might be a threat.

This is plain stupid.

And when the first threat they do not investigate ends up in an assassination, you'll be the first one to crow about how incompetent they are.

Bingo! The secret service investigates thousands of death threats against the president. We're only hearing about this one because her parents are pissed off that someone would dare to discipline their perfect child.

I for one, welcome a visit from my secret service overlords

hope that your wish is granted.

And I hope in twenty or thirty years time, the thought police sterilize you for completley missing out on the meaning of the Bill of Rights

Words can't hurt people. That's why they're protected.

Please show me when violent threats have ever been protected speech.

While you're at it, show me when libel/slander have ever been protected speech.

Finally, show me when incitement has ever been protected speech.

Oh my god...

well he is right.

you do not have the right to make threats against anyones life.

my only point is that anyone who actually takes something like that seriously is a moron, and the fact that we let our government take stuff like that seriously only goes to show how much power we've given them in the last 30 years that they really don't need....

BTW, I did a seach for "kill bush" in quotes, just to see how many hundreds of thousands of hits I'd get, just because I thought it was interesting. Then I ran across this little piece which I thought made some good points.

problem is they have to take them serously. i agree the girl was never going to kill him or attempt. maybe dream about it but hey who hasent'? anyway the SS has a duty to invistagate them. i have no trouble with them doing it.

I do have problems with them intergating her without her parents or a lawyer present.

"They yelled at me a lot," she said. "They were unnecessarily mean."

Coming from a 14 year old probably accustomed to getting whatever she wants - I really can't concern myself with her feelings.

I think the Secret Service did the right things on both accounts. I think kids have a tendency to stretch the truth when mom and dad are around and as such to ask her a few questions without the parents around was probably the better alternative.

Oh, and "acemcmac" you probably want to learn a few things about laws before you keep on spouting off things that you obviously have no clue about.

It does make good points. And all against yours. Funny how you would post a link to an article exposing just how wrong you are... written by people vehemently opposed to Bush.

You know the CIA is overfunded when they start questioning middle school kids.

Yeah, because school kids never hurt people, right?

Right?

Oh, wait...

They do not know what she is all about until they check her out.

Again, the first threat they do not check out that results in someone getting hurt or killed will have people like you screaming about how incompetent they are.

I can admit when part or all of my position is wrong? I think it addresses a different part of my position than the one that's coming to a head in this thread, but I think they make some very good points and I am changing some of my opinions based on what I read there.

Secret Service is not the CIA.

This is one of those things that just kinda says, "Hey I'm clueless but I'll put in my input anyhow."

Which is exactly why she got off so easily (and rightfully so).

This was handled perfectly, the SS agents recognized there was no real threat & let her go with a strong verbal warning. She will suffer no long term consequences from the stupidity of her youth.

You really can't ask for a better ending, she's just pissy because she soiled herself when they dragged her dumb ass out of class.

There comes to a point where you just have use common sense and assume some people are not a threat.

They need to quit wasting my tax dollars.

So you are basically saying you do not want them to do their job? Yeah that's a great idea, let us pay people to perform a job then when they actually do it moan and groan about it and suggest that it is better off for them not to do it.

Those people are getting paid with your tax dollars regardless if they are playing solitaire or, you know, actually doing what they are supposed to be doing.

They determined that she was not a threat and she was promptly released.

They're using much more common sense than you are.

If they would do more "assuming" and less actual verifying, they would need to hire less agents, and therefore it would cost less tax dollars.

What they are saying is exactly what I said to begin with. A right can no longer be a right when it infringes on the rights of another. I gave you examples of speech that did just that, and you rolled your eyes at me.

You needed someone to dress that up in liberal "we hate bush too, but..." rhetoric to understand?

Ding-Ding-Ding!

The Secret Service has an obligation to investigate each and every threat against the President, no matter how far-fetched or insignificant it may appear.

This "teen" would have known that if she spent a little more time in her history homework and a little less time on MySpace.

I think they shoudl have at least notified the parents but they didn't have to include them in the actual questioning. At least not right away but probably shoudl have let them in after a bit to discuss all the facts.

This just goes to show how young people these days have no common sense at all.
