Isn't the TDK actually based on the Sanyo and not the Plextor this time??? I know Plextor uses Sanyo parts...

Where's the poll?
Anyway, I think the TDK is made by Sanyo this time and not Plextor.
The only Sanyo thing that I know Plextor uses is the burn proof stuff which was made by Sanyo. There may be more, but I don't know of it.

Even if they're both made by Plextor, don't you think that Plextor will hold a higher standard to the parts used in their own? Also if you check out the benchmarks, there is a distiguishable difference. The Plextor 161040a also has a fan that the TDK is missing. Just because a company makes a product for another doesn't make that product equal to the companie's own. The TDK drives can stand on their own merit and should. Furthermore people who whine about not getting what they paid for should read about the documented specifications first, and not complain that they didn't get what they were expecting. Sorry for the rant, but I believe if people want Plextor, then buy Plextor! It's not that much more $$, and it certainly is not inferior.

I got my plextor 16x a week ago. I have burned a few cd's so far and no probs at all. It's a quiet drive too! It came with a Verbatim 16x cd and 10x cdrw. I burned an mp3 album at 16x and it was pretty darn fast! I recommend plextor!

TDK 16x10x40 made in "Japan" drive is the same as the Plextor 16x10x40 unit. I have the unit in my PC right now and bought it at Circuit City. The made in "China" drive is a Sanyo unit.

-Yes I like it a lot! I won't buy Creative again. Yes; I've gotten 1 coaster so far... I pulled the disk out, looked at the bottom, and it had a warp in it (the drive didn't do it). Nero reported an error about 48% of the way through it.

I gotta say though that most of my burning is at 12x because it seems as fast as 16x when I'm multitasking. I'm thinking that the burnproof if activated eats up some time recalibrating. Speed isn't a big issue to me anyway, and I won't go with an OEM copy of nero again, got it seperately.

That's like saying the Volkswagons made in Germany are the same as the Porshe's. Where's the proof?
