I can see a dislike for the big Suburban, Avalanche, etc type of SUV, but the CRV, the Liberty, and the little SUV's are ok... Maybe you should add something like that to your poll..

Let me answer that question with another? WTF does that have to do with this topic? You mean people might hate SUVs because they're dangerous to be around? Doesn't look like you garnered a single response that leans that way.

People (with even an ounce of intelligence), buy what's safest, regardless of mileage, aesthetics or anything else. If they happen to think an SUV is safest, they buy it. If it proves otherwise, they buy something else.

If you expect people to buy a particular vehicle to make the road safer for you... GET A CLUE!

Uh oh, here it goes again!

What I want to ask you SUV owners is WTF do alot of you guys put goddamn grills and bars all over your bumpers? Is it because you are likely to hit a damn elephant on your way to the safari? Maybe afraid of a black bear jumping out in front of you while off-roading? I think the answer is quite obvious. A lot of you people just don't care about your fellow drivers out there and are looking to inflict damage when in an accident and just pawn it off as "I'm protecting myself and my loved ones". If you want to really protect yourself buy a Volvo, MB or a Toyota Sienna. If you need to haul stuff or a boat or go off-roading and camping by all means buy an SUV but please don't make excuses for owning these beasts.

SuvS are the most evil thing on the road. I got pulled over 2 days ago becuse some SUV cop in a grand cherokee was tailgating me, causing massive GLARE in my mirror, with his blue light OFF, so i didnt know it was a cop. So to avoid crashing, i went a little faster, but he was allegedly pacing me, and he slapped me with a 190 dollar ticket. :( . The cop and i got into a HEATED argument about SUV's and how the people that drive them are i love you's. Hmmm.. Oh well. Court date's in a month. Bring it on i told him. :D

Ornery,

so we should all get bigger and stiffer vehicles in an effort to own "what's safe"?

so we shall all end up driving 18 wheelers and tanks?

what you say about buying the safest vehicle (safe=big) amounts to an arms race to see who can drive the biggest thing on the road (which is in many reasons why people buy one of these things in the first place).

so what happens if you have a kid that you can't afford to put in a giant SUV? you put them in a smaller car with good safety ratings and they get hit by an SUV that kills them, it's your fault that you didn't buy them a "bigger safer" vehicle?

your argument makes no sense to me.

Putting ground effects and spoilers on a go-cart is OK, but throwing garbage on a truck ain't, why?

Who the hell wants to pay the premium for a foreign car for safety when Detroit makes easy to fix and maintain vehicles right here?

And who wants to be standing by the graves of their loved ones trying to justify their deaths because you were being considerate of others on the road? It's your money, your choice, better make the right one, or be prepared for the consequences.

Edit: Makes no sense to you? Not hard to believe! Here's a clue, you don't have to buy new! And I buy a car for comfort and room on top of safety. Fvck Detroit and their damn mouse-mobiles...

ground effects and spoilers on go-karts don't kill anyone.

high ground clearence, solid steel bumpers and bull-bars do.

egh typical import hater. is that why domestic cars devalue so much??

a 95 mustang is about as expensive as a p3 1000.

Can't say I like 'em much. Mostly, I get annoyed with the folks in the latest Mastadon who think they own the road and want to use sheer size to do whatever they want. And they roll over more than passenger cars, so I'm not too sure about safe. Most folks never hit the dirt with them, so why bother? For my vehicle, I went with a Subaru AWD wagon. Hauls plenty of sheetrock. Mainly, tho: when behind one, I can't see around or through the things (blacked out windows, usually) so there's bad traffic karma; it's better when I'm on my motorcycle, since that's a sportsbike so I can see around/through the SUVs better.

SUV's are great compared to a honda, neon, acura, etc.. etc.. etc.. driving down the highway loud as f*ck because it has an exhaust tip I can stick my whole leg in.. what a joke.. if you want something that has power.. get something with a larger engine... what benefit does that big ass exhaust tip have???.. god I HATE those cars..... I have nothing against them stock or mildly modded, but that big ass pointless exhaust systems are suck... my gf has a new prelude and it runs just fine with the stock exhaust.. :|

I had to rant....

vi_edit: Too bad. I guess that's just the violence inherent in the system. At least Sub makes that Forrester....a more rational SUV, if there is such a thing. Before that I had a Tercel 4WD wagon. Same deal: carrying space when you need it, more like a car when you don't. Low center of gravity, tires that don't howl....The problem is not the SUV but the drivers. BTW, I've driven a tank as well as howitzers. Not comfortable, nor much interior room, and lousy gas mileage. But nobody fights you for a parking space. :D

cipher00, I go a tad over 6' and hover around 200 pounds. All my height is in my legs, and all of my weight is in my upper body. It just doens't work with the tight cockpits in the japanese vehicles. My knees don't fit under the steering wheel and shoulders and back don't fit comfortably in the seats.

My main reason for looking at the german cars was because of their telescoping steering column. With that feature I could pull the steering wheel out past my knees. Japanese cars don't provide me with that luxury :(

But, my good old detroit steel is built for "big and tall" and I fit quite comfortably :)

Don't really care for SUV's, or tar babies as we call them around these parts. But, there are a lot of cute soccer moms that drive them :)

I like trucks and suvs. They tend to keep me out of trouble (I know it doesn't handle like a sports car and don't try.) What bothers me is all the soccer moms that drive them like minivans on stilts. Also if you don't tow anything or go offroad(generally use it for its intended purpose) then i don't think you belong driving it, but that's your decision. To answer someone's question, the brushguards are to keep stuff from fcking up your radiator when you are off roading. In most cases it is essentially the pickup/suv slant on rice.
