No they were pretty plentiful even on release days. Certain markets and stores in certain area's were harder then others. But The head dude for Sony US made a real outlandish claim like two days after release and Penny Arcade quickly put that idea to rest. Put it in the minor over supply area, maybe not major for a couple weeks. But if you wanted a PS3 at launch they were to be found.Months after release they were plentiful. On release day, they completely sold out. There are youtube videos of people posting about how they have PS3s (a notable one was some guy posting his "I've got 3 PS3s; you've got 0"). It wasn't as though everyone that wanted a PS3 could get one on launch day.
The Xbox 360 was worse though. I couldn't pick my preorder up that morning, and went later. Well, they didn't get enough premiums for all the preorders, so I got a normal console + they gave me the HDD and a wireless controller.

no they weren't at all they were hard as hell to get. i remember people lined up 3 days early at hte best buys around me to get a ps3. i waited in line at a walmart from like 10pm and ended up getting one, but the walmart only had 8 ps3's - 6 60gb and 2 20gb ones. i ended up getting a raincheck for one because they didn't have as many as they thought they would had. i picked mine up like a week or so later, but ended returning it 2 weeks after that because i couldn't flip it for more than a few bucks.
maybe you lived in bumfuck nowhere they were easily found, but in most non-rural areas they were impossible to find.
I remember being able to get a 360 easily only because I checked every day. I am sure I could have missed out if I wasn't doing that. The ps3 I remember people talking about the price and not buying it for that reason. Until I got a few people hooked on blu-ray none of my friends bought it.
No this is Sony trumping up their sales. They sold 400k. But 400k where not purchased by users. I don't know why you think it was the stores. None of them are posting that info freely .Read back in the forums here. Check the big Jack Thomspon $1200 to anyone who can find a PS3 statement and the people reactions. Just look at Penny Arcade who was looking in pretty decent area economically. They were to be found if you tried. Walking into Walmart the next day you weren't going to find it. But they were around. They sold out of the initial 400,000 US PS3s on release day. This was reported by the stores, not Sony. I wish I had gotten one of those because I'd have flipped it right away. After the next shipment came through, prices dropped significantly. Luckily, the Wii didn't have such increased supply, so demand was skyrocketting the closer we got to Christmas.

Best Buys and Walmarts sold them pretty well, but places like Toys R Us, Target, Meijers (well in this area). Pretty much any second tier shopping location that carried the PS3 had them in stock to varying degrees.
The worst part about it. Was it wouldn't have even done that well if it wasn't half the price and 10x better for playing BD's than the standard BD players. It's one of the reason's they had such a horrible game attach rate for the first 3 years. Lot's of people where only using them for BD play back.
