I am one the people who is really excited about the newer consoles and newer powerful video cards coming out. However with the advent of these new hardware, the expectation of public in terms of the graphical capability has risen to an unreasonable level. Due to this, the game developers are nowadays investing more and more time towards the graphics rather then the other parts of the game. This has come to my notice with the latest games like Max Payne, Star Wars:Rogue Leader, Pikmin, Luigis Mansion, Metal Gear Solid 2, etc. Although I belive that these games "look" amazing, I believe that these games are very short having about 10-15 hrs of gameplay. This is a major disappointment to me as it pains for me to invest $50 on a game that last only for 10 Hrs but looks absolutely stunning.
I still remember playing Super Mario 64 and Zelda:eek:carina of time for a very very long time before I could complete these games. These games were pretty looking, though not comparable to the games for this generation of consoles, but more importantly they were fun and were long and did not comprise of just repeating the same things over and over again to increase the gameplay time. They did have a large variety of tasks that made the game fun and challenging without ever feeling monotonous and boring.
I would rather see such games more than games like the ones coming out for the present generation. I am sure that I am not the only one wishing this. Also I understand that in a perfect world we would have better graphics and better gameplay, but this would make the cost and the time to create such game unbearable. This lean towards graphics has also made independent game developers to have almost no hope of creating a successful game. This deprives the world of many brilliant games only due to they not looking absolutely like a movie.

Thanks for listening to my rather long but I believe relevant complaints about the status of todays games.

I agree with you on all points mentioned. I find that most of todays games lack one major element, FUN. The main reason why I bought a Nintendo Gamecube is because I want to play fun, enjoyable games over graphically intensive ones. If the gameplay sucks, I don't care how pretty the graphics are.

i think its highly possible for both things to happend.. and it SHOULD happen in every game produced... if you cant produce a fun game, then you should not be allowed to produce anything! ... and then kick in the graphics as well.. the creativity and technology is both there...

I agree that it can happen, but the resources required are way too high. The cost and the time required are so huge. A game like Max Payne with just 10 hrs of gameplay took them 3 - 4 yrs to develop. If they had not concentrated on the graphics, I have a feeling that they could have put more effort into making it around 25 hrs with the same fun but not so graphically cool.

Also the chances that some one independently can come up with a game is so low now. I am hugely interested in creating games, but am intimidated by the graphics. If a single scene of the game takes me a month to develop than there is no way i am going ot complete the game all alone. i need a team, a million or 10 million dollars, publishers, etc. What are the chances of another doom like thing happening.. next to zero? :(

Think of it this way. When you go to the theatre, you end up paying close to $10 for 2 hours of visually stunning entertainment. Multiply that by 5 and you get $50 for 10 hours, same as a video game.
Still a ripoff either way, though.

lets ignore the $50..even then it would be nice to have longer deeper games with more FUN element in them. I mean Zelda 64, mario 64..were so amazingly cool. They dont make games like that anymore ??
sad :(

Play Grand Theft Auto 3. While it doesn't look like total crap, you can tell they spent more time making the game long and fun than pretty.

How coincidental you should say that..
This and GT3 are the games I am into right now...
..and I like the games so far though they are pretty tough
