Blowin in unless you have two fans/windows on opposite walls.

Then, one in and one out

I'm so glad I don't live in a dorm anymore. I'd say blowing in if it is cool outside, blowing out if it isn't.

Fans make the room hotter as a whole (moving air molecules). However, it will make things cooler for you personally because of the wind. Therefore, point it at you and turn it off if you are not in the room.

Well you'll feel cooler while youre going to sleep as long as the wind is blowing your way, but again as a whole, the room will get hotter.

One fan isn't going to have an immediate or drastic effect on the room, unless you leave it on for a while.

In geek terms, think of your computer. Ideally it would work best with two fans blowing in the same direction... one blowing inward, and one outward. The tad cooler air outside goes across the CPU and then the hot air goes out.

Here is the definitive answer.

Have the fan blow in when it is colder outside than in your room. Have the fan blow out when it is warmer outside your room than in your room.

Go to the air conditioned library when it gets too hot and finish your homework.

turn the heat up all the way and then point your fan in. The fan combined with your sweat will cool you off :)

You will want to pull in cool air from the outside with the fan, if the outside air is cool. Otherwise, have the fan blow out the window. However, most of the cooling effect comes from moving air over your skin, so having two fans wouldn't be a bad idea. All this being said, you don't have to worry about your fan heating up your room too much. The most it could heat your room is by the amount of energy it consumes, which in a volume as big as a dorm room with as much stuff in it, isn't much.

The most important thing is air movement. If you open your door or other window, it will work much better. Fortunately it isn't too hot here yet.

Blah you.. my dorm room has stayed around 90º all year long.. They don't have A/C, we have a few fans, but it still is hot all the time. The windows are also receive sunlight from morning to night.. it's crazy. :(

doh! =( during the winter when the sun was lower it would shine straight at our room... it could be -10 outside and it would still be 80 in the dorm during the day :(

i just can't believe they don't have the AC units turned on yet =/

If the air is hotter outside, blow it out, if it is hotter inside, blow it in. Simple....
When you sleep, I like to have it going in because the night air feels so good.
