Poll: So you're in a bumper to bumper traffic jam, miles from the nearest exit

and someone is passing you on the shoulder...

What do you do

edit: here's the story...

GF just called from the PA turnpike in said traffic jam. A ghetto-mobile just tried to pass her on the shoulder. They yelled at her, she yelled back and they "used their camera phones to take picutres of her car"

She is now afraid that because of the color of their skin and their attire that she is going to be the victim of some sort of gang violence at her parent's home.

I wanted to point out to her that the danger for violence was much more immediate and it got me to thinking about how I'd react in such a situation. When I go out to my car this afternoon, I am taking my tire iron out of the trunk and putting it in the passenger compartment where can get to it in a pinch

Just let them alone. You never know - maybe it's somebody trying to get his wife who is in labor to the hospital? Let the cops sort'em out.

Edit: I lied. I throw a brick at their truck!

yeah.. sometimes its undercover.. they be pissed if u try to stop them.. i seen semi that block those lanes for fun..

End Thread

When it takes me longer to get where I'm going because people are passing me on the shoulder, that is my business. And I see it happen over and over again in the exact same area of the exact same road every day when I'm driving home. They must all be rushing their wives to the hospital, which is in the opposite direction. 🙂

I don't try to block them, but I've considered writing a letter to the mayor and/or chief of police.

i get out of my car, bust up a corner store, beat up latino gang members, steal their guns, terrorize a fast food resturant, stalk my ex wife and kid and get shot by a loser cop on a pier

best movie ever

Let them pass. If they run into someone that is having a highway emergency and parked on the shoulder, just don't let him back into the road.

I'd pull over into their way, but back off if they tried to do anything more about it. If they ran into me, all the better, my dad's a lawyer, and we'd get phatty phatty cash one way or another out of them if they did.

I'm glad your dad taught you that "phatty phatty cash" is more important than the danger to your own life you could be risking.

the American way...

If an ambulance or police vehicle needs to use the shoulder to move through the stopped traffic to get to the scene of a possible accident, I'm sure they'll be real understanding when you tell them the reason you have the shoulder blocked is because you wanted to be a dick to some some guy trying to pass you.

Leave them be... no need to introduce unnecessary stress to yourself. Keep telling yourself this and it will be fine. Truthfully.

Drivers passing on the shoulder to get around backed-up rush hour traffic has become a real problem in my area. The shoulder is for emergency use only. Driving in it simply to cheat traffic is felony reckless driving, punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 dollars, up to 6 months in jail, and 1 year drivers license suspension. It's that serious.

That varies by state of course.

It pisses me off though. These self-conceited soccer moms think they're better than everyone else and can drive on the shoulder to get around rush hour traffic, but that blocks access to any emergency vehicles that might need to get through (imagine if we all used the shoulder).
In my mind, these are the same prick drivers who block the left lane doing under the speed limit chatting on their cell phones complaining about "aggressive" drivers while they haven't used their turn signals in more than a year (because they cradle the cell phone in their left hand) and yet they still think they're the safest drivers on the road chasing after stale yellow lights to run a cold red because they're late for an appointment to pick up their kid from montessori school.
