I am thinking about getting a 900-1000MHz Slot A Athlon so I don't have to get a new motherboard. Is this a bad idea? I know I will not be able to upgrade the cpu after that cause they are not making them anymore, but so what! You people say that I will have to buy a new motherboard if I want to upgrade my computer in the future but if I get a Socket A T-bird then I will have to get another motherboard anyway. Plus if I upgrade the cpu then that will be it for a long time. So should I wait till I can afford to get a t-bird or should I just get an athlon now? If you think I should wait till I can afford the t-bird please give me a good reason why. Also I am planning to overclock. I already have a GFD. Which one would o/c better at that speed?

usually i would say if your run your cpu @750mhz, it's fine, there is no need to upgrade.
but if do want one. I usually say upgrade the cpu. but since you got PC CHIP motherboard, I may want to suggest you to get a new motherboard. while you at it, may as well pick up a tbird or duron. recommand KT133A chipset motherboard.

First of all, why even upgrade your CPU? An Athlon 650 is fast enough to max out a GeForce Ultra at proper resolutions. So unless you're doing something that's heavily demanding on the CPU (basically just 3D rendering or digital video encoding) you'd be much better off sinking the money into a better video card like a GeForce 2 GTS, GF2 Pro, or ATi Raedon 32M DDR.

I agree with Modus, a 750mhz cpu is not bad at all performance for just about anything you need to do, except gaming of course, which in case you'd probably look into a good graphics card.

I myself own an 850mhz slot a athlon and i realize that i'm probalby not going to upgrade my system for another 2 years to come. Yeah, it's sad but hey, reality is i probably really won't need all that horsepower anytime soon.

Yeah I know but I have the need for speed! ;) I want 1Ghz!! So if I don't get a 1GHz cpu then I will o/c it. Well if I get a 1GHz cpu I'll o/c it anyway. I can get a 900MHz Slot A for $150 + shipping on e-bay. Cheaper then a GeForce 2 Pro (i think). And yeah the motherboard is a PC Chips but it works perfectly fine. So well in fact I bought another one for my Celeron. Well that was the dumbest thing I have ever done. I have to use software to o/c cause the motherboard refuses to go higher then the cpu is supposed to go and the ram benchmarks are so low it's not even funny. Well anyway will I notice a big proformance difference from 750 to 1000MHz?

Is your motherboard AMD 750 Irongate, or KX133?

If it is Irongate you could possibly pick up a Slot A Thunderbird. I have one, it performs on par with KT133 Socket As, except I don't have AGP4x, etc.

If you really must get the 900 and use your GFD for 1gig operation, But to be honest I dont think you will see that much of a difference. I have a KA7 and a 650@750 and think I could hold out for a while until something really cool comes out. Like maybe a KT166A with 166mhz SDRAM and a 166(333)DDR EV6 bus.(It could happen) With everything I've seen on DDR and the Athlon it doesnt seem like there's any reason to even pursue it until the Athlon gets more Memory bandwidth hungry. The only thing I want to get faster on my machine is my internet connection, and maybe hard drive speed. What am I going to need all that speed for other than to make Rambust more money.

I really want 1GHz but now I think that I might just wait and get a t-bird with ddr ram.

What chipset does your motherboard have? It's a AMD 750, why not get a TBird for SlotA?
