I think we have crappy eyes because at no time did we try to improve them. We were handed some glasses and never did we challenge our eyes to get better. Oh well, I'm in the same boat. My prescription is -8.5 in both eyes.

The number in the poll is in diopters, which is 1/(focal length in meters of your eyes). The minus in front indicates nearsightedness and the + indicates farsightedness. I imagine most of this young crowd would be nearsighted. Let's see if we get a nice bell curve here. If your eyes have different rx, then take the average of the two. Let us see the damage done by the American Optometric Association or whatever the hell they call themselves.

Oh yes, have you ever seen an eye doctor / optomotrist that doesn't wear glasses ? lol

I have no clue how bad my sight is (but it's bad - everything from about a foot away from my face is blurry). I'm seeing my optometrist on the 21st though - so I'll know then!

Wait, so it's true that the more you wear glasses, the faster your eyes get worst?

Anyways, i use to have AWESOME vision, better than people with glasses. But in the last 3 years it's deteriorate. Initially my prescription was so weak that i couldn't get them in contacts, but now they've gotten progressively worst.

I am fairly certain that both my eyes are -35. What I do know for certain is that my eyesight is 20/400. If I look at the eye chart thing without my contacts in, I dont even see anything except a smallish whitish blur.

Hey, me too. Almost all of my friends wear corrective lenses...they really hate me.

Wow at least you can see the white blur.

You can get a good estimate by holding a ruler up to your eye and slide some reading material out from your uncorrected eye. At some point the image or words will appear clearest. Convert those inches or centimeters to meters and take inverse and that will be the diopters.

Regarding the eyesight getting worse because of wearing glasses, I remember when I first got contact lenses (hard) the doctor saying that these would actually keep my eyes from getting worse whereas glasses wouldn't. I don't know if this is true and it certainly isn't true for soft lenses. But I've always been suspicious of why so many people wear glasses or lenses; it seems like some kind of conspiracy to me (see Oliver Stone)

I can actually see fairly well without my glasses/contacts, things are just a little blurry, and I can't see detail very well. My sister's eyes are horrible. She's blind as a bat without them. But I'd never drive at night without my glasses, or in an unfamiliar place where I need to see road signs BEFORE I'm right next to them. :)

Edit: I typed this whole thing without my glasses on, 18 inches away from my 1600X1200 desktop. :D

I can see fairly well without glasses or contacts too. I don't wear either a majority of the time, but I end up wearing them for about an average of an hour or two on school days. I can read things on the screen, see TV, read books, etc just fine without, and sometimes better without.. I don't know what my thing in diopeters is really.. I just tried to estimate, and it's less than -1.. I guess my eyesight is somewhere around 20/40 - 20/50 and has been that way for several years. My optometrist says I should wear glasses all the time but they still give me a headache and make it harder to see after about 3-4 hours of wearing them in a day. :disgust:

Yeah, yeah, mine used to be 20/15 at one time too. It went to hell over night it seems. That's if you consider a -1 Rx going to hell. Actually, left eye is worse at this point, so it's time to tweak the Rx. Your day will come!

I asked the Doc when I first got my glasses if any of those old wives tales were true. He said none were. I don't wear my glasses when I'm off work anyway. Whenever I get my driver's license renewed, I make sure I don't have my glasses on when I take the eye test. Otherwise I'd have that restriction and that would suck. BTW, how is your night vision? Mine went down the tubes about 12 years ago. That's what clued me in to get my eyes examined in the first place.

as far as I know, wearing glasses shouldn't weaken your eyes. What I've been taught is that there's a problem with the eye's focus so that the light that hits the nerve at the back of the eye has either under or over shot the mark where the image is clear. The lenses cause the light entering to enter at a different angle so that the lens inside the eye focuses right on the nerve. Laser eye surgery bypasses the extra lens by warping the natural lens inside the eye to focus correctly. Ergo, unless you're talking nerve damage like prolonged exposure to radiation or energy, glasses shouldn't be doing any damage.

I'd love to participate in this poll but the writing is to small for these old eyes to read!
