POLL: sick days from work

how often do you take sick days for legitimate sicknesses ? I am not the most healthy person but I just can't remember the last time I had to call in sick... must've been years ago... and I get unlimited sick days too.

Rarely am I legitimately sick. I still take sick days though.

EDIT: They are called PTO though. But I'm a contractor now though, so if I don't go to work, I don't get paid.

So far with my current employer is 1 day every 5 years. Probably should've taken alot more time off, but we don't really have the staff.

as many as I can get away with, unfortunately I'm working self-employed contracts nowadays and can't get away with not doing the work.

Get this. We get 5 sick days a year. Any leftover amount of sick days at your anniversary, 20% is converted into vacation time. However, you get paid 100% for the sick time that you used. WTF!?

We don't have sick days. Instead we have personal days that are used if you are sick or you can use them for whatever. Now if you use up your personal days for the year and then sick, you have to use vacation time for the sick days.

if you count days when my whole family is sick so i stay home to take care of them, plus days when i have something more than a bad cold, then about 1-2 days per year

the weird thing is, they don't let us use our sick days unless we have to go into the hospital or have surgery and have to stay home for weeks to recuperate

So far the only sick time that I've taken when I wasn't sick was for a school function that I told them about 3 months in advance.

I don't have time to play around taking off work. We've got deadlines.

I take sick time any time I feel sick. They give me some unreasonably high amount of it, so I might as well use it. I don't feel like a better employee for not taking advantage of the benefits that come with the job.

That said, I may take a day or two off once or twice a year, I'm not that sickly.

I've never taken a sick day in 17+ years. I've broken bones, got splashed in the eyes with acid, and had several "stitches wothy" cuts but as soon as I was released it was back to work.

Hardly ever.

We have the most convoluted attendance system at work:

5 sick days and then are awarded points for a month of perfect attendance and another point for a string of 3 months of perfect attendance.

You start the year at 12 points (if you had 12 or more from the previous year). You use a point if you call in an hour before the start of your shift to say you're going to miss or are late. You use 2 points if you don't call in.

When you get down to zero points you're terminated.

You can accumulate up to 28 points over the year. You turn in your points over 12 for $50/point so I'll be getting a check for $800 in June.

Well with that system if I was going to be late I would just take the day off. Is this hourly or salary?

last time I took a sick day was at my last job, almost 2 years ago.

I called out sick the day before my last day. no one at the office believed that I was sick, but I really was. that job revolved around the phone, so if it was excruciatingly painful whenever I talked, there was no point in showing up to work. my boss would have sent me home anyways.

I think I get 5 sick days/year. I've never bothered to check. I'd have to be practically on my death bed to call out sick, though. someone not showing up makes life a lot harder for everyone else working, and I wouldn't do that to my coworkers unless I absolutely had to.

Work for a major software vendor. 17 vacation days. 30 sick days a year. salaried so doesnt matter if I call in sick.
