I think so. This world is already seriously over populated. Time to put the deviants to sleep I say.

I think so. I'll be finding out first hand about how effective (rather, the lack thereof) therapy is for those types of criminals in a few semesters.

being 20 and sleeping with a 16 year old shouldn't garner the death penalty

Well, I'm not a sex offender. :)

I'm in a master of arts clinical psych program. One of the things we do as part of the curriculum is get 450 hours of supervised practicum experience. One way to do that is to work on sex offenders in the local prison.

Though I'm thinking about switching to general psych because I'm interested in doctoral training.

That would be a good start.

How about next we get rid of the 3 strikes law, and replace it with get convicted of 3 class A felonies and you get a free ticket to death row....w/ no appeal process.

woohooo a death penalty thread

/me grabs popcorn and sits back to watch the show

(BTW, I am in favor of just punishment, meaning that the punishment should fit the crime. If you rape someone, then I guess ol Bubba from cell block D gets a half hour of quality time with you)

well, i assumed
you weren't the offender in question. it just seemed like an interesting position to be in.

as far as castration: that seems like a better sort of punishment. death really is nothing to dangle in front of someone...who knows what they believe if they are sex offenders, one generally assumes they may have some sort of mental problems...death is not necessarily a threat to someone like that. at the same time, i understand that it may be your only concern to remove them from the planet. that i understand...but...i would like to leave them on this earth to suffer becuase there is no way to know what will come after. the universe may not have a word for "justice"

Castration does not solve the problem. There was a clinical study done many years ago where multiple sex offenders volunteered to be castrated (thereby getting their time reduced). Shortly after release, these guys committed rape using foreign objects.

Rape has nothing to do with sex. It has to do with power/control.

There is no known cure for sexually deviant behavior. It is a mental illness.
Some facilities use a 16-step counseling programme, but there is no evidence to support that this effectively does anything to suppress this type of behavior.

Death, in this case, is not meant to be a threat. Its societies response to an awful crime. The final solution.

It depends on if you think we should be in the business of revenge or not. Me? I don't think so. It's hard to say whether the death penalty is revenge or not. I kind of lean toward the side that says it isn't. The convicted aren't going through any undue suffering. They just get put down as cleanly as possible.

I mean, if a dog bites someone, we're not going to bite back. We're going to put it down. :D

Revenge I suppose is satisfying, but I'm not sure how I'd feel being part of a society that allows people to get raped and tortured as a form of punishment.

edit: this response was more toward the idea of pain and suffering being visited upon the rapist, rather than the use of the death penalty
