Both Hong Kong and Australia is enforcing this right now. It is proven that a LOT of the accidents can be avoided if the driver is not on the phone.

YES

The level of impairment from talking on a cell phone and driving is equivalent to being legally drunk, or having a .10blood alcohol level.

Why isn't it legal?

Lobbyist, bit $$$, corporate bullsh!t..

Yes. Time and time again, I see drivers making risky turns and lane changes while talking on the phone....:|

I'll vote for that! And yes, I am guilty as well. Remember what it was like before you had a phone in the car?

Several counties / local municipalities around here have passed anti cell phone laws. Basically they are written to outlaw driving while distracted so that they don't single out cell phones. I think this is a smart way to do it.

Absolutely!!!!

Phone shouldnt work if car is moving. Would have been easy to do when phones were wired into cars but with new cell phones might be a little harder but Im sure it could be done.

Outlawing driving and talking on the cell phone might make things safeer, but so would outlawing working a cd player, lighting a smoke, eating fastfood, etc...etc...
I belive that they should have stricter penalties for causing accidents because you weren't paying attention, or weren't driving responsibly for the situation.

IN the end it is the responsibitly of the driver to pay attention to the road and know when and where it is appropriate to talk on the phone, to change a cd, to search for you lighter. I don't want there to be a law in place that punishes everyone jusst because a few are stupid and irresponsible...we would need a hell of a lot more laws than just that one..

Are you referring to all cell phones, or just the ones that are not hands free?

My brother is a Fireman in Indiana, and has a couple of highway accident stories that would be useful to someone trying to make a case against cell phones and driving.

Why is it that every time something bad happens to someone, everyone starts crying out for new laws? Do you people really want to live in a police state? If you want to ban something, ban stupid people from breeding! That will solve far more of these problems than a myriad of unenforcable laws.

I'm not sure, but it would make things so much safer. Maybe if they enacted several hefty fines specially aimed at violations due to cell phone using while driving. That might deter a few, which would be a nice start.

Personally, I don't mind cell phone use while driving as long as they pull over to dial and us some type of mic (so they can use both hands to drive- some of them need both).

Banning cell phones while driving isn't the answer. Requiring all drivers who want to "talk and drive" to buy a hands-free set is.

Cell phones that you must use your hands with, absolutely. I'm still thinking about the hands-free ones.

Amusingly, I was listening to a talk show while waiting for a traffic report. Some municipality up here banned cell phone use (hands free was ok). The show hosts were irate, as was nearly every caller who, you guessed it, was using a cell phone to call in.

Meanwhile, a polling organization asked around the populace if cell phoning while driving should be banned. 82% said 'yes.'

Hands free only is acceptable. I staill can't figure out some people can't talk and drive. It's like their running DOS 5 or something!:p

With the handsfree set, I don't think the cell phones pose any dangers. It's like talking to the person sitting next to you.

As long as people learn to use their phones without having to look at the keys, I don't think it's a problem either.

It is illegal here in the UK, but its impossible to enforce. The only way to stop getting a phone call in your car is to switch off your phone, but people then think "that means other folk cant contact me, i'll leave it on". Theres no way to stop people making calls while they are driving, other than chopping off their hands....then they wouldnt be able to drive!!

Personally, i dont think hands free is acceptable. You still have to conectrate on both the phone call and driving along. The only difference is your not holding a phone.

I have only ever used my phone while driving once. I was on my way home after a job interview, when they phoned me up to offer me the job. It was really difficult to concentrate on the phone call and rush hour traffic at 70mph at the same time. I'll never do it again for fear of crashing regardless of whether it is legal or not.

Do you ever drive with a passenger in your car? Must be a pretty quiet ride if you refuse to talk to them.
