Poll: Should public schools teach the personal benefits of slavery?

Should public schools teach blacks received personal benefits from slavery?

  • Yes - because factual. Blacks learned skills like carpentry, husbandry, farming, blacksmithing, etc

  • No - because the very suggestion is abhorrent especially to black families.

The skill blacksmithing was suggested by DeSantis himself. Whitewashing of black history from American history got a new boost in Florida. Teachers when discussing slavery will now be required to discuss the personal benefits blacks got from being enslaved.

I wonder if in their zeal to protect their poor little white kids from the truth they are willing to piss on black families in that state? Or maybe other Republican states will take the baton and continue the race. No pun intended.

Please include any comments you have about the new Florida school mandates.

As an addendum it wasn't long ago the teaching of black history was mandated in Florida, 1994.

I guess it took Republicans a little longer than they thought to begin erasing it.

Problem with florida is it's a dumping ground for every other state's dumbasses who move there for one reason or another when it's hell hole unless you are wealthy or it's retired people who go there for idk taking out life insurance on their spouse in the hopes they get hobbled by a gator?

If I were a teacher in Florida here's my move.

Stand up in front of the class and say, "The state of Florida required me to inform you enslaved blacks received personal benefits from slavery were taught useful skills such as.........

I would then open the classroom up to comments and questions. Let the kids hash it out.

absolutely.

and how in that social situation, the morally correct thing to do is to secretly sabotage any project said skills are used on. To build in defects.

A wheel wright for example could one day quietly substitute improper piece of wood into front left wheel for the carriage of the masters family. Preferably before a long trip to the city.

A carpenter could put a defective leg on the lady of the houses rocking chair. One that would take years to fail, but would fail long after it was forgotten who had done the work.

A blacksmith could alter the composition of the nails for the plantation so they all only last a few years. The same smith could smuggle tools to slaves looking to escape with the material saved.

What's next, the benefits of being raped? The benefits of being molested? The benefits of being attacked by a wild animal? The benefits of setting ones self on fire? Of being shot? Stabbed? Strangled? The benefits of a man beating his wife senseless?

Now we know.... Now we know what DeSantis and the likes of are really into. S&M. Sadism. Witchcraft. Humiliation. Toucher.
And they justify their sadistic needs and desires by claiming IT HAS IT'S BENEFITS. Benefits to the abuser and to the instigator, that is. They pretty much let the cat out of the bag admitting for them it equals pleasure.

Hey, now we know where all those missing kids probably disappeared to. The depths of Ron DeSantis basement. Anyone checked there???

They didnt have to worry about expensive families cause their kids could be sold to another slaver.

They didnt have to worry about birth control or being raped cause their kids could be sold to another slaver.

They didnt have to worry about financial planning or retirement cause they worked until they died anyway.

Same for planning big vacations!

What else am i missing?

Remember Republicans in Texas wanted to change the name of slavery as taught in elementary schools to involuntary relocation.

Is there any doubt they are trying to completely whitewash history? White Republicans can no longer be trusted with recording history. They've proved their pension for lying.

Many religious people were able to rationalize the immorality of slavery by saying they were at least exposing the african slaves to Christianity. What's being said now by Desantis and Watters smacks of that and will fit right in with the "Hey lets create a theocracy!!" part of the GOP.

Are we going to pretend that these "skills" were an act of kindness?
It was another cruelty of forced labor.... It helped perpetuate their slavery.
To that end, I cannot condone the context of pretending the benefits outweighed the evils. It really did not.

But why even broach the subject, why try and make this argument in the first place?
Many religious people were able to rationalize the immorality of slavery
Anyone trying to do that... is trying to normalize and perpetuate slavery, are they not?
Make America Great Again, like it's 1860?

How could you possibly advance yourself when it was illegal to teach blacks to read. Fake history, is fake history.

Do you also think they needed to read from a book prior to working a field?
That's not how humans teach each other basic manual labor....

Look out, here comes a PHD in McDonalds!

Or:" And since you can learn a lot of useful skills while being enslaved, I will now treat you as slaves to improve your skillset." :p

I feel bad bringing an amazing comic into this but all this reminded me of Calvin's dad. Slavery builds character! (Extreme sarcasm)

Amazing it is how DeSantis is trying to paint over the crimes against humanity that the nation's slavers represented with a prettier whitewashed one the same as most any Republican is trying to do with that other crime against humanity by the name of one Donald Trump.

What a weird hill to set up camp on.
The notion I replied to, the notion of... "they were not taught to read, ergo they could not do anything of value"
Is a gross violation of reality. That's my hill.

My reasoning is that no one learned Blacksmithing from a book. Basic trade skills are not academia. Especially not back then. Someone who knew the labor, showed others how to do it. Simple as that. I refute that reading was relevant to the subject.
