Yugoslavia was a country held together by strongman and his successors. Since the fall of the USSR, this country has been divided into several different new countries, each with its own government. I have not heard any support for making all of these new slavic countries recombine once more into one country ... have you?

Now we have Iraq, also a country that was held together by a strongman. It seems to have three distinct areas and there is a problem trying to get them to agree upon a common bond. Wouldn't it be better if Iraq became three separate nations?

I'd like to hear the pros and cons on this for it does not seem to be considered by anyone at this time.

:Q Smoke in the P&N forum? :Q :p

Would breaking it up solve anything except possible infighting? I wouldn't oppose the idea but I don't think WE should do it. That is something for them to decide after they govern themselves. I also wonder if they could have a 3 state country which may provide each with a little autonomy and self rule but still be under the umbrella of "Iraq".

It will never happen, nor should it. It is a soverign country with a GDP that cannot be devided without hurting either side of a division. It has more than 2 secular divisions in the country and that is not uncommon in todays world. It is not justification for drawing a new map. Diplomacy, and inclusion of different factions and ideology is needed with respect for one anothers differences. In time that will occcur.

You need to get out of the "I want it now, my way" mentality. Iraq is a complex problem. It has no quick fix, nor should it have.

Bad idea, because one side will always complain that the other side got more oil.

There you go. ;)

The voting is pretty close but I have not seen any arguments for YES beyond my initial limited attempt.

I've added the "if that is what they want" to the title to clarify my question.

No, but to maintain an Iraq- there will need to be a strong central government~~ something the kurds wouldn't necessarily like.

No the real reason is. Turkey would try and take Kurdistan by force, and another part would willingly join Iran. Its funny though some people want Palestine to be its own country, but not the same for the kurds. The kurds have been through alot more over the past several hundred years, than the palestinians ever went through.
