Living in the country isn't really good for the kids. They will grow up with a small town mentality, be naive about people trying to play them as such, probably have a worse education than they could is more urban areas (not inner city), and generally hate life.

mmm, my wife has the exact opposite opinion as you about that stuff, she thinks the smaller school district will be better and wants to get the kids away from the "big town mentality"

I wouldn't base moving off of availability of broadband and satellite tv, but I would stay in the burbs.

Stay in the suburbs. Kids who grow up in the country sure as hell don't like it. I can guarantee your kids won't. Seems like a great idea but you will only limit their education and ideas.

I grew up in a medium sized town, with several small towns around me. Medium sized >>>>>> small town.

Move to some place with like 5-10k people. Anything smaller than that and funding just won't be there for attracting higher quality teachers, businesses which could provide you/your children with jobs won't want to locate there, and your children will have the small town mentality of knowing and trusting everyone.

Yeah, that damn big-town mentality of funded schools and things to do besides drink underage and get teenage girls pregnant. Go Hicksville!

that is the size the school district/town she wants to move into is

the town we live in now is ~25,000 with 8,000 kids in the school district, she wants to move near a town (so we are in the school district) that is ~10,000 with only 3,000 kids in the schools

Ahh, that's not small town or country. Go for it, if you can live with giving up the amenities that a larger city offers. It doesn't sound like the area you're in now is too horrible.

it isn't horrible, but when they take the drug dog through the middle school (6th - 8th grades) here in Liberty, they usually end up with a couple squad cars filled with kids in hand cuffs

our friend that lives in this other town, he has lived in the area 15-20 years and is an art teacher at the high school of this other smaller town, he knows cops around the area and says that doesn't happen at the middle school in the smaller town

I didn't even think they knew what drugs were in Missouri. :)

I'd say go for it then. It will be better for the kids in the long run, just make sure you teach them about the real world, outside of your quiet town.

Having a little bit of land is always nice for kids, too. Plenty of room to play any sport they want. You can get sprinklers and trampolines going during the summer. Plenty of active, outdoors type things for them to do. Let them break the cycle of computer nerds.

This girl I used to like... She lives in a town of 1000, at least during the summer (hence the lack of a relationship in person), and all she does is drink. Every night. Alot of days too. I got tired of being ignored because she was too busy drinking with her idiot redneck friends. It was somewhat amusing when her drunk cowboy friend named "Jakson" called me though... Fvcking dumbass asking me if I was getting plastered.

i live in the countryburbs, not to small, but you got enough land out here, and its a nice town. you still get the idea of playin, and it isnt all white. we have a "park" near us, that houses almost every african american here. they are everywhere, and yea. but you still got drugs, and alcohol galore. its cool out here, land is nice.

(this is ohio)

I always imagine settling at the country side! I guess somehow it gives me that feeling of bliss. However, it's hard for me to imagine doing that if I do have kids. I'll have to wait for my kids to grow into adulthood before I move to the country side.

Country side is just my dream some day. Hopefully I'll find someone who likes that kind of life too. ;) :D

you can also opt for a 802.11b wireless solution, they've gone as far as 20 something miles with high gain parabolic dishes (provided you have a direct line of sight!)

You've answered your question already - you already said that you don't like the country - it's nice that you're thinking of the wife and kids, but you're also going to live there for the rest of your life if not a long time there.

I'd say no, stay in the 'burbs.

When you have kids, if you're a halfway decent parent, you don't really live your life for you until they're 18+.

I gotta say the country... I'm in the sticks, and love it. I wouldn't move to get broadband. If you pick the area right, you're kids will thank you for it :)

Regardless, the kids move out at 18, he doesn't.
