*POLL*Should anyone learn how to speak english prior to coming the US?

So I was in Michaels (arts and craft store) today looking at some spray paint and there is a hispanic fella looking at them too. He picked up a can and started to spray the shelf,which left a big circle on the shelf and smelled up the isle. An employee walked by and asked him not to do that (even made the hand motions not to do that) and the hispanic shook his head yes. Not even 5 seconds after the employee walked away, he popped open another and sprayed the shelf again. It seems to me that he didnt understand english or was being a total ass. I'll give him the benifit of the doubt and say he didnt understand english

Soooo....My question to you is should anyone that comes to the US to live learn how to speak english PRIOR to coming?

Yes they should. It should also go the other way. If an English-speaking person moves to a country that speaks another language, they should learn it before they do so.

Totally agree. And ALL people should learn to speak the language of their prospective country. It just makes life a whole lot easier on everyone, and makes you less of a pain in the ass to natives if you speak their language.

Except the French. They'll still hate you because you're not French, no matter if you speak their language or not.

Yes, I think they should learn at least enough English to get buy. Problem is, Americans complaining that others who come here don't speak the language is often hypocritical, because so many Americans refuse to learn other languages before going to other countries.

Not before you go, but it should definitely be one of your priorities once in the country. It may be difficult for someone to learn Swahili here if you were to go to Kenya for a job, so I say let the english speaker go to Kenya for the job, but make sure you take Swahili lessons right away.

That being said, I can definitely see your point. The bank machines here have English, French (both official languages, so that's fine), Punjabi, and Chinese. What's more, you can get your safe driver's manual (book you study from for your learner's permit) in any of those 4 languages for sure, plus a few others I believe. What's worse is you can have a friggin' translator in the car with you while doing your road test so you can understand the english speaking examiner. I mean, how is that cool? That means they can't even read STOP on the sign...

I don't say you have to know the language before coming, but at least make an honest effort right away once you get here.

Well, are you talking about just going on vacation or emigrating. Obviously, one should learn a language if emigrating, but if you are only going on vacation, then a pocket language conversion dictionary should do.
