that is, which should I use for the personal essay I need to write for my english class? I've narrowed it down to these two because I know a bit about them, I've had experience with them (less directly with self-injury), and the general public seems to have many misconceptions about both (we're also submitting the essays to a competition sponsored by a national magazine).

I'd guess so too, but it's hard to judge because *most* people are rather secretive about both, and many people who have sad don't even know that there is such a thing.
