Where was that confirmed, if at all?

I was under the impression that its legallity was still up in the air.

the only way that you could even begin to claim that it's "legal", is by saying that the US Law doesn't apply to it, because it's in Russia.

Then, if you use that argument, you might as well just be going to RussianMP3Warez.com or something.

The RIAA is trying to sue them, I think that is proof enough. Think about this, it is very easy to distribute mp3s why don't the bands just sell it directly from their website? That way all the profits would go to them. They have contracts with the recording industry that prevents these things.

RIAA lawsuits don't necessarily imply legality.

It questions the legality, if what this russian company is doing is perfectly legal the RIAA wouldn't do such a thing. Do you see the RIAA suing Buymusic.com or Itunes?

No, because I don't want the RIAA to hack the servers, get the list of users and be sued because I downloaded illegal music. If you are on record paying for something you are pretty much fvcked in court.

You can't make the argument that US law doesn't apply because AFAIK, we have copyright agreements with almost every country.
Plus, you are the one infringing on the copyrights, and you are in the U.S.

You guys....MAN:|. Read the damn thread thread in hot deals. A lot of interesting legal questions are raised and somewhat clarified.

You aren't serious are you? You do not honestly believe that the RIAA wouldn't sue even if it was legal. MANY companies tie up the legal system on technicalities in the hopes of forcing oppenents to capitulate due to lack of funds.

Sorry about the "idiots" crack, but I was hoping for an intelligent disscussion/debate based on facts.

In addition, artists do get money.

THe question that the HOT DEALS THREAD raised for me was the question of importation. YOu are importing legal goods. If anything would be in question, it would definitely be TARRIFS.

I know JACK about intellecutal property and any applicable taxation....

From the ALLOFMP3.com website , as posted in the Hot deals thread

All the materials in the MediaServices projects are available for distribution through Internet according to license # LS-3Ì-03-79 of the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society. Under the license terms, MediaServices pays license fees for all the materials subject to the Law of the Russian Federation "On Copyright and Related Rights". All the materials are available solely for personal use and must not be used for further distribution, resale or broadcasting.

I think the site is illegal. There are many illegal sites in Russia that distribute mp3s mainly just for signing up with an e-mail address, but they certainly don't have proper licensing. So I think no I wouldn't do it b/c it's not right. And because you only get stupid from that music, it doesn't help much in anything. Just a few days ago I saw a pretty funny DVDs on sale for like $4 that had very wrong translations of popular movies like T2, T3 and the Matrix (the plot totally screwed up, for example John Connor wants to blow the Matrix in T3 and lots of obscene language and low end jokes there). And these DVDs are sold just like they're legal. I'm saying this so that you'd have an idea what can come as 'legal' from Russia.

no, i'm sorry, that's incorrect. riaa/mpaa has sued people/companies that were doing perfectly legal things. like dvdjon for example.

There's also that other russian mp3 service...I think it's like club.mp3search.ru or something?
They also claim that they pay the artists. Although since Dido's new album is 76 cents I'm guessing her cut would be like a nickel. lol

lol damn I gotta learn russian to see those. Dammit John Connor SHOULD have blown up the Matrix!

The site might be legal if you're a Russian citizen though I'd bet against it.

But just because it's legal in Iraq or Afghanistan to own a fully-automatic AK-47 doesn't mean you can legally import one from there into the US.

I've used it for about 4 hours and have spent about $15.00. However, I know have 40+ records at 192 VBR Lame. Pretty freakin' sweet if you ask me.

Do you honestly think the artists sees ANY of the money? .03 per song...after they pay for bandwidth, make some cash, and pay licensing what does the artist get? 0.001?
