so here's the thing, for the longest time, i've had some rants on my website, that are potentially offensive. i didn't really think about them much until recently, when some irate readers posted in my guestbook. it then occurred to me, that having those rants on a website where professors, co-workers, managers, could easily see them (since it was on a university server) might not be such a hot idea. so i decided to move them to a different server.

what do you guys think about this? am i a coward for letting potential retribution get in the way of the dissemination of my ideas? or was this the smart thing to do? or both... ;)

I wouldnt say you are a coward, but letting someone else decide when and where you state your opinion isnt the greatest of things. If you took it upon yourself to remove the Rants, great, it is your decision. Not wanting to deal with all the people who take others opinions as matters of life and death would be a good enough reason for me to remove what I thought was possibly "problem ensuing" rants. It wouldnt change the way I think, just the manner in which it is presented.

If that made no sense forgive me its 3am:)

Sum up: Do what YOU want to do, not what others want you to do. Which it sounds like your doing anyway.

Its your personal site - post whatever you feel fit.

Personally I would not post that sort of content because I use my web site to show prospective employers etc.

You did the smart thing, its not worth getting in trouble or on the bad side of people just for a personal website that probably doesn't get a lot of hits.

What kind of rant was that?

Maybe there is a way to present the rant such that it looks more like a debate or good point for improvements?

I say that it was good to take it off the university system's server. check their conditions of use statement, you will see that you could have been in serious trouble if you would have kept that site with them. now that it is off their servers, do what you want.

<< your site = you da boss. >>

Nope, wrong answer. HIS site, but on the UNIVERSITY's server. So, it's NOT really his site.

Gopunk, you and I disagree on most things, but one thing I think we DO agree on is the right to say what's on your mind, right? :) Here's my take.

If it was YOUR website, on YOUR server, using YOUR bandwith that YOU pay for, I'd say leave all the offensive material up there for all the world to see; whomever doesn't like it, doesn't have to read it. Tough nuggies if they get offended.

But, like you said; your professors/deans/etc can see this stuff...they might be offended and you don't want to piss off the people that have your future in their greasy little hands.

I say remove the material ONLY because it's on the University's server.

exactly. i don't know all the specifics behind this but i would guess that you are trying to build a future for yourself. regardless of whether it is "right" or not, people seeing this stuff will not have the opportunity to know your motivations and will likely see this in a bad light or at least childish.

Don't sweat the small stuff.;) You won't give 2 craps about the site in 2-3 years.
