Poll: Remote Desktop management Solution - VNC vs MS Terminal Service/Remote desktop ?

VNC vs MS Terminal Service/Remote desktop ?

Pros & Cons ?

VNC = opensource, free, cross platform, get the job done.

MS Terminal Service/Remote desktop = MS proprietary, faster response, better integration and more functionality, but seems to need a server to run the service ? (can anyone confirm that ?)

I have use VNC for a while but never use MS TS/RD, what will I be expecting if I switch to MS solution, compared to VNC ?

Your thought ?

Is there any reason most Corporate IT Dpt use MS solution instead of VNC ?

hmm...

it's not even close. if you have Win XP Pro or Win 2kx server than TS/RD is CLEARLY better than VNC.

if not, then you don't have a choice.

I like Funk Proxy the best, but it's expensive. I like to use VNC on client's machines so they can see what I'm doing...it puts them at ease. I also prefer VNC for working on servers. I like RDP for VPN'ing in and getting work done.

hmm.. VNC outnumber MS ?

....

that's because there are a lot of MS haters on AT.

I've used both and use TS every day.

How does preferring a simpler, crossplatform, lower-resource remote management tool make someone an MS hater?

RDP/Terminal service is Microsofts gift to the remote access/management community.

I  terminal services.

And no, you don't need a "server" to use RDP/TS. Any desktop running WinXP Pro or Win2k can log into, or be logged into with terminal services.

ok.

I just tried the latest version of TightVNC and it is a LOT better than the version of TightVNC i tried 2 years ago. it has improved a lot more during that time than TS/RD did.

Win2k Pro does not have Terminal Server.

agreed. AFAIK Win2k Pro cannot host a RD Session. that is a Win XP Pro exclusive.

I'm pretty certain you can download the newest version of RDP and install it on Win2k Pro boxes.

interesting. i've never tried it that way before. you can install RDP from win xp cd to any windows 9x or above OS. i know that.

but i thought that only worked as a RDP CLIENT.

before RDP , i would put VNC before TS

but now, RCP is built in , why bother to add VNC when RDP is built in?

i use RDP everyday, it is the winner!

seems some of u guys are really confused.....

So am i understanding this correctly ?

RDP client = can be install on most MS OS workstation
RDP host = can ONLY be install on XP or server OS

someone must clarify....

Also ... Win2k Pro & XP workstation does not have Terminal Server ? But can use terminal service. <- Need answer...

Terminal Server (the name implied itself?) must run on Server OS ? <- Need answer...

I can't fiddle around with it much since I don't have IIS installed on the machine I'm posting from, and I don't have a win2k cd handy. But I'm pretty sure using IIS and the tsweb control you can log into a Win2k Pro machine.

But they do both get the job done.

RDP client can be installed on any MS workstation, there's even a mac client!
RDP host is part of XP Pro/Server2003.
Terminal Services was the earlier version of the Remote Desktop protocol and was part of 2000 Server OS's. I don't remember what NT had...

Ok, looks like it'll work, but that's an ActiveX control and probably sucks as bad as the Java VNC console. 😛

NT also had Terminal Services.
