Mandrake may be nice, but I can't adjust my refresh rate without installing a kernel module. Nvidia compatability problem == teh lose.

I'm interested in this as well.
As a linux n00b, I've already tried out early Mandrake 9 betas (RC1) and discovered that Mandrake (1) has serious issues with the HPT372 RAID controller on my mobo, (2) has serious issues with NTFS partitions, and (3) has serious issues with my Geforce4.
I really would like to try out and get more familiar with Linux. Would RedHat be a better choice? Is there a Linux distro that is even moderately user-friendly? I don't mean dumbed-down for idiots but one that doesn't require more investment in time than is worth it.

I read OSNews' review of RedHat 8 and it didn't sound very nice....

as for windows....WinXP sucks, Win2k is the best version of windows to date.

How to get your raid controller to work: http://www.timj.co.uk/linux/

The reason that NTFS doesn't work in linux is cause MS doesn't want it to. All the progress in reading NTFS in linux is from reverse engineering. Don't expect it to work well anytime in the near future.

Geforce 4 drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=linux

Try harder next time.

Winxp is essentially win2k with an aol interface and better driver support. Disable the aol-interface and you get Win2k with better driver support.

Granted, user accounts aren't as easy in xp as they were in 2k, but I can overlook that because I don't use them. I'm sure all the old features are there, I just haven't found them.

As for mandrake/redhat, I've always been a mandrake fan myself. Haven't tried 9.0 out yet, I'm waiting for someone to put it up on their webspace and for google to catch it so I can grab the whole thing at 200k+/sec like I did with 8.1 :)

Please don't tell me to "try harder next time" when the last thing I said in my previous post is that I didn't want to be forced to screw around with Linux for more time that it was worth. Despite the time I waste here, I'm not unemployed and I do have a life, so I don't get but maybe 2-3 hours a night (at best!) to screw around with on my home rig.

I was already well aware of all 3 issues and why they occur, thank you very much though for the links and implying that I am an idiot because of Mandrake's time-wasting incompatibilities. I already spent the time and money using PM8 to convert my NTFS drives to FAT32 only to discover that the latest kernel is still not compatible with the HPT372 controller (as had been promised). Now, my question was is RedHat 8.0 any better?

It doesn't really work like that. IIRC, the old windows was just another theme...there was no way to actually remove the themes and get back the wonderful UI win2k has.

Even if you put on the classic skin, not everything changes and I could still see remnants of the AOL UI. For example users, find, shutdown (IIRC), in explorer etc etc etc.

After 3 months I couldn't stand it anymore and reformatted. Now running win2k/mdk9.

But XP isn't all bad. I loved the collapsable systray, the dsl software and the extra drivers.

Redhat is better than Mandrake (8 vs 9), IMO. Using 8 right now, and was using Mandrake 9 a few days ago. Mandrake just felt a bit too bloated. I wish Debian had an easier X setup process. :D

isn't redhat8 composed of 5?

if so, how is mandrake more bloated?

did you read thier review of mandrake 9?

Holy crap, whatta review :Q

But I have to say, Mandrake 9.0 is awesome. Every piece of hardware is auto-detected and works out of the box, expect the Nvidia driver that I have to download, but I also have to download it in Windows :) Well until now, I had NO problems in Mandrake 9.0 and can only recommend it. The mouse-wheel even worked during the installation :)

It depends on the version you get. If I remember correctly, there is also a professional version of mdk 9 that comes with 8 or 9 cds. Most distros are like that.

RH 8 has the gutted/hybridized/whatevered gnome/kde window manager, while mdk 9 has the full versions of both. Still, I'm gonna get rh8 in addition to my copy of mdk 9 just to compare easily.

And for those of you looking for download links, quit being so lazy and go to the distro's homepage and click on the mirrors link. I got mdk 9 at 300 K off of one of those mirrors 4 days ago.

Redhat is 3 cds; the other two are source CDs. For me, I only needed the first two CDs for my installation. By bloated I'm really just talking about resouce use, especially in X. Redhat feels snappier, and uses less memory to boot.

Just entirely disable winXP themes. It will work, operate, and look just like win2k
